Nitish Kumar Reviews 1,200-Bed Hospital Project at IGIMS Patna, Orders Fast-Track Completion

Patna, February 2026: Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Friday reviewed the progress of construction work for a new 1,200-bed hospital building along with a residential complex at Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), Sheikhpura, Patna. Officials informed the Chief Minister that the construction work is progressing at a rapid pace and is expected to be completed soon. Emphasising the importance of timely execution, Nitish Kumar directed officials to ensure that the project is completed at the earliest.

The Chief Minister said that once completed, this state-of-the-art multi-super-speciality hospital will significantly enhance medical treatment facilities for patients and improve overall healthcare services in Bihar. He added that the project would play a key role in strengthening the state’s health infrastructure and ensuring better access to advanced medical care for the people.

Reflecting on the progress made in the healthcare sector, Nitish Kumar said that since the formation of the government on November 24, 2005, sustained efforts have been made for the upliftment of all sections of society and for development across every sector. The health sector, he noted, has witnessed several major reforms and improvements during this period.

He recalled that earlier, primary health centres used to receive only about 39 patients per month—roughly one or two patients per day. However, since 2006, a comprehensive system of free medicines and treatment has been implemented in hospitals. As a result, primary health centres now receive an average of around 11,600 patients every month, reflecting increased public trust and improved service delivery.

The Chief Minister further stated that Bihar earlier had only six medical colleges, a number that has now increased to twelve. The capacity of Patna Medical College and Hospital is being expanded to 5,400 beds, while five other older medical colleges are being upgraded to 2,500 beds each. In addition, IGIMS itself is being expanded to a total capacity of 3,000 beds.

Nitish Kumar said that these initiatives have considerably strengthened the healthcare system in Bihar, ensuring that citizens have access to quality medical facilities and improved health services across the state.

Senior officials present during the inspection included Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Deepak Kumar, Chief Secretary Pratyaya Amrit, Health Department Secretary Lokesh Kumar Singh, Secretary to the Chief Minister Kumar Ravi, Secretary to the Chief Minister Dr. Chandrashekhar Singh, Special Secretary (Health) Himanshu Sharma, Managing Director of Bihar Medical Services and Infrastructure Corporation Limited Amit Kumar Pandey, IGIMS Director Prof. (Dr.) Bindesh Kumar, and other senior officers.
