Meghalaya Police to Challenge Bail Granted to Sonam Raghuvanshi in Raja Raghuvanshi Murder Case
Shillong, June 2026 : Meghalaya Police on Friday announced that it will challenge the court’s decision to grant bail to Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime accused in the sensational murder case of her husband, Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi.
Director General of Police (DGP) Idashisha Nongrang confirmed that the state police are preparing to move a higher court against the bail order. Addressing reporters in Shillong, she said the department remains committed to ensuring that the case is pursued vigorously and that all legal avenues are explored.
“We are challenging the court order granting bail to Sonam Raghuvanshi,” Nongrang stated, emphasizing that the police are determined to continue their efforts to secure justice in the case.
The DGP also responded to concerns regarding alleged procedural lapses during the investigation, defending the officers involved in the probe. She said that certain criticisms were based on a minor technical error and should be viewed in the broader context of a complex investigation involving multiple accused individuals and extensive legal procedures.
According to Nongrang, the controversy revolves around a single document in which a legal section was incorrectly cited. She clarified that the transit remand proceedings and other critical legal documents had referred to the correct provisions of law and that the discrepancy was confined to one isolated instance.
“You have to allow a certain amount of leeway to investigating officers, especially in a case involving several individuals. The issue being raised relates to only one document where a particular legal section was inadvertently mentioned incorrectly,” she said.
The police chief stressed that the error was purely technical and did not affect the core findings of the investigation or weaken the prosecution’s case against the accused. She maintained that the investigation had been conducted in accordance with legal procedures and that the integrity of the probe remained intact.
Nongrang further asserted that the alleged lapse had no impact on the evidence gathered or on the legal standing of the case. She said investigators had followed the required processes and continued to work diligently to build a strong case.
The murder of Raja Raghuvanshi has drawn widespread public attention due to its high-profile nature and the circumstances surrounding the businessman’s death. Meghalaya Police have conducted an extensive investigation, examining evidence, questioning suspects and coordinating various legal processes as part of the probe.
Despite the court granting bail to Sonam Raghuvanshi, police officials remain confident about the strength of the evidence collected during the investigation. Authorities have repeatedly maintained that the case against the accused is supported by substantial material and that they are prepared to defend their findings in court.
With the police set to challenge the bail order before a higher judicial forum, the case is expected to enter a new legal phase as investigators continue their efforts to secure a conviction and bring the matter to its conclusion through the judicial process.
