Aizawl, March 2026: The 115th International Women’s Day (IWD) was observed across different parts of Mizoram with various programs and community activities. According to the International Women’s Day Committee, during a meeting held on February 19, 2026 under the leadership of Social Welfare, Women and Child Development Minister Lalrinpuii, it was decided that since March 8 falls on a Sunday, the official state-level celebration will be held on March 18 (Wednesday).
People who wished to observe the day earlier were encouraged to celebrate it in their neighborhoods, villages, and churches. Various organizations have also been requested to organize programs throughout the month of March to mark the occasion.
Theme for 2026
The theme for International Women’s Day this year is “Give to Gain.” In the Mizo language, it has been translated as “Pekin Lukhawng a Nei,” which encourages people to help others and contribute to society in order to achieve shared progress.
Purpose of Celebrating the Day
International Women’s Day is observed with several key objectives:
- To celebrate the achievements and success of women in different fields and encourage them to continue progressing.
- To reduce the gender gap between men and women, especially in areas such as education, leadership, and employment.
- To raise awareness about gender equality, including equal wages for equal work and preventing discrimination against women.
- To encourage people to support those who are less privileged, such as educated individuals helping others learn and leaders taking steps to uplift women in society.
Because of its importance, the day was observed enthusiastically in many places across the state.
Community Activities
One popular activity was the traditional preparation of bai, a well-known Mizo dish made with vegetables and local ingredients. Many women prepared the dish together and shared it with neighbors, spending the day in a joyful and friendly atmosphere.
Branches of the Mizoram Gorkha Women Association also organized various programs to mark the day. Their activities included distributing essential items to needy families, providing food for people who lacked proper meals, and organizing community service activities. More programs are planned during the week.

In addition to helping people in need, they offered special International Women’s Day discounts and held short awareness sessions during church gatherings. Women officers of the Salvation Army were given a 10-minute speaking session during the service to share messages related to the day. More programs are planned in the coming days.
Members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church Women’s group visited elderly and sick members who were unable to attend church. They prayed for them and provided emotional and spiritual support as part of the celebration.
Social Support Activities
Besides church programs, several organizations and groups visited hospitals to offer assistance. They donated to poor funds, provided support to patients, and distributed essential items to those in need.
Women representatives also contributed to the celebration by providing lunch to patients and attendants at Durtlang Hospital, showing solidarity and care for the community.
