IndiGo to Levy Fuel Surcharge on Domestic and International Flights from March 14
New Delhi, March 2026 : IndiGo, India’s largest airline, announced on Friday that it will introduce a fuel surcharge on domestic and international flight tickets starting March 14, citing a sharp rise in aviation turbine fuel prices linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
In a statement, the airline said the surcharge will range between ₹425 and ₹2,300 depending on the route and distance. The additional charge will apply to tickets booked for both domestic and international flights operated by the airline.
According to IndiGo, the decision has been taken in response to a significant increase in fuel prices, which has substantially raised operational costs for airlines. Fuel remains one of the largest cost components for aviation companies, and the recent surge has forced carriers to adjust pricing structures.
“IndiGo, India’s leading airline, is introducing a fuel charge on domestic and international routes effective March 14, 2026,” the airline said in its official statement. The company noted that global fuel prices have risen sharply due to the ongoing geopolitical situation in the Middle East.
The airline also referred to data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which shows that jet fuel prices in the region have increased by about 85 per cent. The steep rise in aviation turbine fuel prices has significantly affected airline operating expenses.
Industry experts say that airlines are facing mounting financial pressure as fuel costs surge amid instability in the Gulf region. Aviation turbine fuel accounts for a major share of airline operating costs, making carriers particularly vulnerable to fluctuations in global energy prices.
IndiGo’s move follows similar announcements by other Indian carriers. Earlier, Air India and Air India Express also introduced fuel surcharges on several routes in response to rising jet fuel costs.
According to the airline group, a fuel surcharge of ₹399 per ticket on domestic flights came into effect from March 12. The same surcharge is also applicable to flights connecting destinations within the South Asian region.
For international routes, the surcharge varies depending on the destination. Flights to West Asian destinations will carry an additional charge of around $10 per ticket, while passengers travelling to African destinations may see surcharges ranging from $30 to $90.
Similarly, flights to Southeast Asian destinations will attract a surcharge ranging between $20 and $60, depending on the route and distance.
Airlines said the surcharge will be implemented gradually across different routes as carriers adjust to higher fuel costs triggered by the evolving geopolitical situation. Industry officials indicated that such measures are necessary to offset rising expenses and maintain operational stability while continuing to provide services to passengers.
