Telangana Congress Faces Internal Rifts as Minister Backs Jagga Reddy for TPCC Chief
Hyderabad, March 2026 : Signs of internal discord have surfaced within the ruling Indian National Congress in Telangana, as senior leader and minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy has publicly backed T. Jayaprakash Reddy for the post of state party chief.
Speaking informally to mediapersons in the Assembly lobbies, Venkat Reddy said that Jagga Reddy should be appointed president of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC). He described him as a strong mass leader and asserted that his leadership could significantly boost the party’s prospects.
“If Jagga Reddy is made TPCC chief, the Congress will win 100 seats in the next Assembly elections,” the minister claimed, expressing confidence in his leadership abilities. He also compared Jagga Reddy to the late P. Janardhan Reddy, a prominent Congress figure known for his grassroots connect.
Currently, the TPCC is headed by Mahesh Kumar Goud, who took over the role in September 2024 from Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. Jagga Reddy, a three-time MLA from Sangareddy, is presently serving as the working president of the state unit. He had earlier been associated with the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (formerly TRS) before joining the Congress in 2015.
Meanwhile, another senior Congress leader, T. Jeevan Reddy, has added to the party’s troubles by expressing dissatisfaction and hinting at a possible exit. Speaking in Jagtial, he said he was contemplating leaving the party due to ongoing tensions with MLA M. Sanjay Kumar.
Jeevan Reddy, who has been associated with the Congress for over four decades, has been engaged in a prolonged rivalry with Sanjay Kumar. The latter is among a group of 10 MLAs who switched allegiance from the BRS to the Congress in 2024. The conflict intensified after Jeevan Reddy lost to Sanjay Kumar in the 2023 Assembly elections from Jagtial.
He has also criticised the party leadership for inducting Sanjay Kumar and alleged bias in ticket distribution for upcoming municipal elections, claiming that more tickets were allotted to Sanjay Kumar’s supporters.
Adding to the complexity, the Telangana Assembly Speaker recently dismissed petitions seeking disqualification of the defecting MLAs, further fuelling discontent within the party ranks.
These developments highlight growing factionalism within the Telangana Congress, raising concerns about unity as the party prepares for future electoral challenges.
