Webinar Held on World Sparrow Day, Emphasis on Awareness for Conservation

Raipur, March 2026 : On the occasion of World Sparrow Day, a webinar was successfully organized on March 20 under the guidance of the Chhattisgarh State Biodiversity Board and the State Wetland Authority. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from subject experts, environmentalists, bird lovers, parataxonomists, college professors, and students.

The webinar was coordinated by Mateswaran V., who, in his address, expressed concern over the declining population of sparrows. He emphasized the need for collective efforts to conserve sparrows and urged participants to actively contribute to this cause and collaborate with the Board.

During the session, Dr. Hitnarayan Tandon, Assistant Professor at Sant Guru Ghasidas Government PG College, Kurud, delivered a detailed presentation highlighting the reasons behind the decline in sparrow population, along with safety measures and various aspects of their conservation.

The second speaker, Jageshwar Verma, stressed the importance of creating suitable habitats for sparrows. He discussed the adverse impacts of urbanization and suggested practical measures to develop a safe and supportive environment for birds.

Experts also addressed queries raised by participants during the webinar, making the session interactive and informative.

Observed every year on March 20, World Sparrow Day aims to raise awareness about the conservation of the house sparrow (Passer domesticus), whose population is rapidly declining due to urbanization and pollution. The day highlights the ecological importance of this small bird and its role in maintaining environmental balance.

The primary objective of the program was to increase public awareness about sparrow conservation and strengthen government initiatives related to biodiversity protection. It also focused on drawing attention to the decreasing sparrow population and encouraging people to create a bird-friendly environment by providing food and water for them.
