Sonia Gandhi Discharged from Hospital After Recovery

New Delhi, March 2026 : Senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi was discharged from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on Tuesday morning after recovering from a systemic infection, hospital authorities confirmed.

According to an official statement, Gandhi had been admitted late on March 24 with complaints of fever. She was placed under the care of a team of senior doctors, including Dr Ajay Swaroop, Dr D. S. Rana, Dr S. Nundy, and Dr Arup Basu. The hospital said she was treated with a course of antibiotics and responded well to the treatment.

“She has now recovered and has been discharged this morning. She will continue her treatment and follow-up at home,” the statement said.

Her hospitalization had briefly affected the Congress party’s political schedule. Her son, Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, cancelled his planned visit to Kerala on March 25, where he was scheduled to launch the party’s campaign for the upcoming elections. In his absence, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge led the campaign launch in the state.

Meanwhile, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Member of Parliament from Wayanad, visited the hospital during Sonia Gandhi’s stay, reflecting close family support during her treatment.

This marks the second hospital visit for the veteran leader this year. Earlier, on January 5, she had sought treatment at the same facility for respiratory discomfort and was discharged after a short stay.

Sonia Gandhi, who turned 79 in December last year, continues to be one of the most influential figures in the Congress party. Just days before her hospitalization, she had publicly criticised the central government over its response to the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, describing its stance as an abdication of responsibility rather than neutrality.

Her recovery and discharge come as a relief to party members amid ongoing political activity across the country.
