Pant Reflects on Missed Opportunities as Delhi Capitals Outplay LSG in IPL 2026 Clash

Lucknow, April 2026 : Rishabh Pant admitted that conceding “a few extra runs” proved costly for Lucknow Super Giants as they slumped to a six-wicket defeat against Delhi Capitals in their Indian Premier League 2026 encounter at the Ekana Cricket Stadium on Wednesday. Despite early breakthroughs with the ball, LSG could not defend a modest total of 141, as Delhi chased it down with composure.

Reflecting on the loss, Pant pointed out that his side fell short both with the bat and in capitalising on favourable bowling conditions. “When you score around 140, you tend to try too much. If the opposition plays normal cricket, they win. A few extra wickets in the Power-play could have changed the game,” he said after the match.

Lucknow had banked heavily on their pace attack to defend the total, deploying a four-pronged seam strategy right from the outset. The plan initially worked, as the new ball offered significant movement. Mohammed Shami struck early, dismissing KL Rahul for a duck with a full outswinger that was sliced to deep backward point. Nitish Rana also struggled to find rhythm and edged a delivery from Mohsin Khan to the keeper after a brief stay.

Prince Yadav emerged as a key performer during the Power-play. He first forced Pathum Nissanka into a mistimed shot, brilliantly caught by Pant after a diving effort near the boundary. He then produced a peach of a delivery to bowl Axar Patel, swinging the ball late to crash into the stumps.

Despite the promising start, Pant felt his team could not build sustained pressure. “There was help with the new ball, but we couldn’t get a solid partnership while batting, and later we couldn’t break theirs. When you don’t have enough runs, you’re forced to experiment — even using part-time options,” he explained.

Pant also addressed his own dismissal earlier in the match, which came via an unfortunate run-out. Choosing not to dwell on it, he said, “The best way to deal with such moments is to move on. You can’t control them, and overthinking only puts you under pressure.”

Discussing his batting strategy, Pant highlighted the importance of flexibility. He had promoted himself up the order to maintain a left-right combination and disrupt the opposition’s bowling rhythm. “The plan was for Ayush Badoni to take charge in the middle overs while I batted higher. Unfortunately, I got out at the wrong time, and that hurt us,” he added. While he described opening the innings as a “50-50 call,” Pant hinted that he would continue to feature in the top order.

On the other side, Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel credited his team’s disciplined bowling and calm approach during the chase as key factors behind the win. “The new ball was doing a bit, and we discussed making the most of it. Our bowlers executed the plan perfectly. Later, we knew one good partnership would finish the game,” he said.

Delhi’s bowlers laid the foundation for victory with a clinical performance. Mukesh Kumar set the tone early, maintaining tight lines and exploiting swing to keep Mitchell Marsh in check. Axar then dismissed Aiden Markram, as LSG ended the Power-play at 48/2.

The wickets kept falling as T. Natarajan removed Ayush Badoni, and Lungi Ngidi deceived Nicholas Pooran with a clever slower ball. Marsh tried to anchor the innings but fell for 35 to Kuldeep Yadav. Though debutant Mukul Choudhary showed intent with a quick 14 and Abdul Samad fought hard for his 36, LSG suffered a late collapse, adding just three runs for their final wickets.

Ngidi and Natarajan claimed three wickets each, while Kuldeep chipped in with two, restricting Lucknow to a below-par total.

During the chase, Delhi initially stumbled but regained control through a crucial partnership between Sameer Rizvi and Tristan Stubbs. Axar revealed that the message during the strategic timeout was simple: build one strong partnership. The duo responded brilliantly, stitching together a match-winning 119-run stand.

Axar also explained his tactical decisions, including prioritising pace over spin due to the pitch conditions and promoting Rizvi as an Impact Player. “We had options like Ashutosh Sharma, but Rizvi has been outstanding in practice. He showed great temperament tonight,” he said.

Rizvi’s innings was a testament to resilience. After a slow start, he shifted gears, taking advantage of the limited spin on offer by attacking bowlers like Shahbaz Ahmed and Markram. His well-paced fifty and unbeaten 70 ultimately sealed the match for Delhi.

The comprehensive victory underlined Delhi Capitals’ strong start to the season, while Lucknow Super Giants were left to reflect on missed opportunities and areas for improvement, particularly in converting early momentum into match-winning performances.
