Mhatre’s 73 Powers CSK to 209/5 Against PBKS in High-Scoring IPL Clash

Chennai, April 2026 : A scintillating knock from youngster Ayush Mhatre, supported by explosive cameos from Sarfaraz Khan and Shivam Dube, powered Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to an imposing 209/5 in 20 overs against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in their IPL 2026 encounter at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Friday.

CSK’s innings began on an uncertain note, with early setbacks testing their batting depth. The pressure intensified when Sanju Samson fell cheaply for just 7 runs, continuing his struggle against swing this season. A sharp outswinger from Xavier Bartlett induced an outside edge, neatly taken behind the stumps, leaving CSK on the back foot in the Power-play.

Amid the early jitters, Ayush Mhatre emerged as the driving force behind CSK’s recovery. Displaying remarkable composure and intent, the young batter counterattacked with precision and confidence. Having prepared extensively for short-pitched bowling, Mhatre executed pull shots with authority, quickly putting the PBKS bowlers under pressure. His calculated aggression ensured that even well-directed deliveries were dispatched to the boundary.

Mhatre’s innings was not just about power but also tactical awareness. After opening his account with a boundary over mid-on, he forced the bowlers to alter their lengths and capitalised on anything short. He raced to 29 off just 19 balls, taking full advantage of fielding restrictions. By the ninth over, he had surged to 59 off 32 deliveries, showcasing a blend of clean hitting and smart placement, including four boundaries and five sixes.

While Mhatre dominated, CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad struggled to maintain the tempo. His 28 off 22 balls came at a time when acceleration was crucial. Eventually, the pressure to increase the scoring rate led to his dismissal, leaving the middle order with the task of sustaining momentum.

With CSK reaching 94/1 after nine overs, the platform was well set. However, Mhatre’s dismissal for a brilliant 73 off 43 balls proved to be a turning point. At the time of his departure, he had contributed nearly 60 per cent of the team’s runs, underlining his importance. The rest of the batting lineup struggled to match his fluency, and a brief middle-order slump allowed PBKS to claw back into the contest.

Between the 12th and 14th overs, CSK lost wickets in quick succession while failing to maintain a steady flow of runs. Punjab’s bowlers tightened the screws, with disciplined lines and clever variations disrupting the scoring rhythm.

Just when CSK appeared to be losing momentum, Sarfaraz Khan injected fresh energy into the innings. Known for his unconventional stroke play, he unleashed a flurry of innovative shots, including ramps and deft dabs, particularly against Arshdeep Singh. Sarfaraz’s rapid-fire 32 off just 12 balls, at a staggering strike rate of over 260, revived CSK’s innings and pushed the scoring rate back up.

At the other end, Shivam Dube initially took time to settle but soon found his rhythm. After Sarfaraz’s departure in the 17th over, Dube took charge, playing a crucial finishing role. His unbeaten 45 off 27 deliveries featured powerful hits and smart strike rotation, ensuring CSK crossed the 200-run mark.

The total of 209/5 marked CSK’s return to high-scoring form at Chepauk, as they crossed 200 at home for the first time since April 2024. It also underlined their ability to post big totals despite early setbacks.

For PBKS, Vyshak Vijaykumar was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets, while Yuzvendra Chahal, Xavier Bartlett, and Marco Jansen chipped in with one wicket each.

Despite conceding a big total, PBKS remain well in the contest, boasting a strong and deep batting lineup capable of chasing challenging targets. With the pitch offering good value for shots and both teams packed with power-hitters, the stage is set for an exciting second innings in Chennai.

Brief Scores:
Chennai Super Kings 209/5 in 20 overs (Ayush Mhatre 73, Shivam Dube 45*; Vyshak Vijaykumar 2-38) vs Punjab Kings
