Tomato Farming Transforms Fortunes
Farmer Lekhram Kevat Becomes a Symbol of Self-RelianceEarns Rs 6 Lakh Annually from Tomato Cultivation on One Hectare
Raipur, April 2026: Farming in Mirchid village, located along the banks of the Mahanadi in Bilaigarh development block, has taken on a new direction and identity. Farmers here have moved beyond traditional agriculture and turned tomato cultivation into a strong source of income.
Today, tomatoes are grown on more than 50 acres in the village, making Mirchid emerge as a major hub for vegetable production.
One such progressive farmer from the village, Lekhram Kevat, has been practicing advanced tomato farming for the past 15 years and is writing a new success story through his hard work and experience. Currently, he cultivates tomatoes on about 2.5 acres of land, earning nearly Rs 6 lakh annually.
Lekhram primarily grows the “Laxmi variety” of tomatoes, which has high demand in the market. His produce reaches not only local markets but also mandis in Raigarh and Shivrinarayan. Around 100 crates of tomatoes are supplied daily from his farm, generating a monthly income of over Rs 50,000.
A key feature of his farming is that the entire work is managed by his family. This reduces cultivation costs while also providing employment to family members.
Tomato cultivation in Mirchid village is not only increasing farmers’ incomes but also strengthening the economic condition of the entire region. Lekhram Kevat’s success is inspiring other farmers to adopt modern techniques and transform agriculture into a profitable enterprise.
