Australia Welcomes US-Iran-Israel Ceasefire, Urges Lasting Peace and Stability in West Asia

Canberra, April 2026 : Australia on Wednesday welcomed the announcement of a two-week ceasefire involving the United States, Iran and Israel, expressing cautious optimism that the agreement will hold and pave the way for a broader resolution to the ongoing tensions in West Asia.

The ceasefire follows a decision by US President Donald Trump to pause planned military strikes against Iran, stepping back from the brink of a major escalation. The temporary halt in hostilities is tied to the reopening of the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for global oil shipments. The move has brought significant relief worldwide, particularly amid fears of disruption to energy supplies and rising geopolitical instability.

The breakthrough came just 90 minutes before a self-imposed 8 p.m. EST deadline set by Trump for Iran to respond, with reports indicating that behind-the-scenes diplomatic efforts, including involvement from Pakistan, played a role in easing tensions.

Iran has signalled tentative acceptance of the arrangement. Its Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi stated that Tehran would suspend its operations if attacks against the country cease.

“If attacks against Iran are halted, our powerful armed forces will cease their defensive operations,” Araghchi said. He added that safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz would be ensured for a two-week period through coordination with Iran’s armed forces, subject to technical considerations.

Responding to the development, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese issued an official statement welcoming the ceasefire as a positive step toward diplomacy.

“Australia welcomes the agreement by the United States, Israel and Iran to a two-week ceasefire to negotiate a resolution to the conflict in the Middle East,” Albanese said.

He reiterated that Australia has consistently called for de-escalation and an end to hostilities, stressing that dialogue remains the only viable path forward. The Prime Minister also highlighted the broader economic and strategic implications of the conflict, particularly disruptions to key maritime routes and global energy markets.

“Iran’s effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, along with attacks on commercial vessels, civilian infrastructure, and oil and gas facilities, has caused unprecedented shocks to energy supply and significantly impacted fuel prices,” he noted.

Albanese warned that prolonged conflict would not only deepen humanitarian crises but also exacerbate global economic challenges. “The longer this conflict continues, the greater the consequences for the global economy and the higher the human cost,” he said.

He further underlined Australia’s engagement with international partners in efforts to restore stability. “Australia has been working closely with global partners to support diplomatic initiatives aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz, ensuring that essential supplies reach those in need, especially vulnerable populations,” he added.

Reaffirming Canberra’s position, Albanese emphasized the importance of maintaining the ceasefire and pursuing a lasting resolution. “Australia wants to see this ceasefire upheld and a comprehensive resolution achieved,” he said.

He concluded by urging all parties involved to adhere to international humanitarian norms and prioritise the protection of civilian lives.

As the fragile truce takes effect, global attention remains focused on whether this temporary pause can evolve into a sustained peace process in a region long marked by volatility and conflict.
