Andhra Pradesh Targets 10 Lakh PNG Connections, Chandrababu Naidu Pushes Clean Energy Drive
Amaravati, April 2026 : N. Chandrababu Naidu on Friday set an ambitious target of providing 10 lakh Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections across Andhra Pradesh within the next six months, underlining the need to promote PNG as a cleaner and more efficient alternative for households.
During a high-level review of domestic gas supply at the state secretariat, the Chief Minister directed officials and oil companies to address supply challenges, particularly those arising from ongoing global conflicts affecting energy markets. He emphasised that ensuring uninterrupted access to gas would be critical to achieving the state’s clean energy goals.
Naidu also instructed officials to intensify awareness campaigns among beneficiaries of the Deepam scheme, encouraging them to switch from LPG to PNG. He clarified that households opting for PNG would continue to receive subsidies under the scheme and asked authorities to issue immediate orders confirming this provision.
Highlighting the importance of clear communication, the Chief Minister stressed that beneficiaries must be assured that migrating to PNG connections will not affect their existing entitlements. The move is aimed at accelerating adoption by removing doubts among consumers.
The Deepam 2.0 scheme, launched on October 31, 2024, provides three free LPG cylinders annually to eligible households. As part of the government’s flagship “Super Six” promises, the initiative seeks to ease financial burdens on families, improve women’s health, and promote the use of cleaner cooking fuel. The scheme currently benefits over 58 lakh households across the state.
Reviewing progress on PNG expansion, Naidu assessed measures being taken by oil companies to scale up infrastructure and overcome logistical constraints. He directed officials to ensure there is no delay in meeting the six-month target and called for close coordination between departments and stakeholders.
Officials informed him that the domestic gas supply situation is likely to stabilise soon, which could support the rapid rollout of PNG connections.
The Chief Minister also reviewed the delayed Srikakulam–Kakinada natural gas pipeline project and sought explanations for the hold-up. Upon learning that certain approvals were pending at the Centre, he spoke directly with Hardeep Singh Puri, urging swift action to expedite the project, noting that the tendering process has already been completed.
Responding positively, the Union Minister assured that the matter would be reviewed at the earliest and necessary steps would be taken to accelerate completion, paving the way for improved gas connectivity in the state.
