K.T. Rama Rao Warns of Mass Movement Over Delimitation ‘Injustice’ to South India
Hyderabad, April 2026 : K. T. Rama Rao, working president of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), on Wednesday issued a strong warning to the Centre, stating that any delimitation of Parliamentary constituencies that undermines the interests of South India could spark a massive regional movement.
KTR, as he is popularly known, asserted that if the delimitation exercise results in reduced representation for southern states, it would go beyond being a mere administrative or legislative process. Instead, it could ignite a widespread public agitation across the region. He emphasised that such a move would be seen as a direct affront to states that have contributed significantly to the nation’s development.
Reiterating his party’s consistent position, KTR said there has been no shift in the BRS stance over the past three years. He stressed that the party remains firmly committed to opposing any delimitation formula that penalises southern states, particularly those that have successfully implemented population control measures and achieved strong economic and social indicators.
Highlighting the contribution of southern states, KTR said they have set benchmarks in governance, economic growth, and social development. He argued that it would be both unjust and unreasonable if these states were to suffer politically due to their success in managing population growth, while states with higher population growth receive increased representation.
He also criticised the idea of curtailing representation of progressive states, saying it runs counter to democratic principles. “If voices from the South are suppressed or diluted in Parliament, we will not remain silent. We are prepared to launch an uncompromising struggle to safeguard our rights,” he declared, underscoring the seriousness of the issue.
KTR urged the Central government to take note of the concerns being raised and to act with prudence. He expressed hope that leaders in New Delhi would recognise the ground realities and adopt a fair approach that does not alienate any region.
The debate over delimitation has also found resonance across the political spectrum in Telangana. Except for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), most parties in the state have opposed the proposed pro rata model for increasing Lok Sabha seats.
Adding to the growing chorus, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy recently wrote an open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling for a broader national consensus on the issue. He advocated for a hybrid model instead of a purely population-based or pro rata approach, warning that the latter could have serious implications for federal balance.
In his communication, Revanth Reddy highlighted that several states, particularly in the South, have deep concerns about the proposed changes. He cautioned that implementing a pro rata system could prove detrimental to national unity and equitable representation.
The Chief Minister has also reached out to his counterparts in other southern states, urging a united stand against any move that could disproportionately impact the region. As the debate intensifies, the issue of delimitation is fast emerging as a significant political flashpoint with potential nationwide implications.
