West Bengal Polls: 152 Seats Vote in High-Stakes Phase 1 Amid Tight Security
New Delhi, April 2026 : Voting for the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections is set to take place on Thursday, covering 152 constituencies across 16 districts in what is being seen as a crucial opening to a closely contested electoral battle.
Around 3.6 crore voters are eligible to exercise their franchise, deciding the fate of 1,478 candidates in this phase. The constituencies are spread across both North and South Bengal, reflecting the state’s complex political and demographic landscape.
The Election Commission of India has made extensive arrangements to ensure smooth and fair polling, deploying a record 2,407 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), amounting to over 2.4 lakh personnel. This marks one of the largest security deployments in the state’s electoral history, despite the polls being conducted in just two phases this time.
The compressed schedule is a significant shift from previous elections, which were held in eight phases in 2021 and six phases in 2016. Officials say the reduced timeline is complemented by tighter monitoring and stricter enforcement of election rules.
A direct contest is expected in many constituencies between the ruling All India Trinamool Congress and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party, particularly in nearly 80 seats where competition is anticipated to be intense. However, several constituencies may witness multi-cornered contests, with the Left Front and Congress contesting separately and other smaller or religion-based groups entering the fray.
The districts going to polls in this phase include Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, Uttar and Dakshin Dinajpur, Malda, Murshidabad, Birbhum, Paschim Bardhaman, Purulia, Bankura, Jhargram, Paschim Medinipur, and Purba Medinipur.
Security arrangements have been significantly strengthened, with Quick Reaction Teams deployed around polling booths and as many as 7,384 locations identified as “super-sensitive” or “critical.” These areas will see enhanced monitoring to prevent any disruption during voting.
Observers note that voter turnout patterns in minority-dominated regions and tea garden areas will be key indicators in this phase. Additionally, the functioning of complaint redressal systems set up by the Election Commission will be closely watched as a measure of the effectiveness of the tightened arrangements.
For the ruling Trinamool Congress, the challenge lies in retaining its stronghold from the 2021 elections, particularly in rural and minority-dominated belts that are crucial to its electoral prospects. The party will be aiming to maintain its dominance despite changes in voter rolls and heightened security presence.
On the other hand, the BJP sees this phase as an opportunity to consolidate its position, especially in North Bengal, border regions, and select urban pockets. A strong performance here could set the tone for the rest of the election and reinforce its challenge to the ruling party.
With high voter stakes, heavy security deployment, and intense political competition, the first phase of polling is expected to play a decisive role in shaping the trajectory of the West Bengal Assembly elections.
