Israel Destroys Major Hezbollah Tunnel Network in Southern Lebanon

Jerusalem, April 2029 : Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday announced that Israeli forces have destroyed a massive underground tunnel network built by Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, marking a significant escalation in efforts to dismantle the group’s infrastructure.

According to the Israel Defense Forces, the tunnel was one of the most extensive discovered in Lebanon to date. Stretching over 2 kilometres and reaching depths of up to 25 metres below ground, the structure was reportedly constructed over nearly a decade with financial backing from Iran.

Netanyahu, in a statement posted on social media, said Israeli forces had “blown up a massive Hezbollah terror tunnel” and were continuing operations to destroy militant infrastructure and eliminate operatives. He added that dozens of Hezbollah fighters had been killed and indicated that further actions were forthcoming.

The IDF said the tunnel system was uncovered during operations conducted by Division 36 in the Qantara area of southern Lebanon. The structure, carved deep into granite bedrock, featured an elaborate design with approximately 30 vertical shafts providing access. Inside, troops discovered a complex network of rooms, including living quarters equipped with showers, lighting fixtures, and decorated corridors displaying images associated with Iran’s leadership.

Military officials described the tunnel as a highly sophisticated facility used by hundreds of fighters belonging to Hezbollah’s elite Radwan force. The network reportedly housed a substantial cache of weapons, suggesting it was designed for both storage and operational deployment.

The destruction operation involved the use of around 450 tonnes of explosives, highlighting the scale and resilience of the underground infrastructure. The IDF noted that such tunnels pose a significant strategic threat due to their ability to facilitate covert movement, storage of arms, and potential cross-border attacks.

An international military expert involved in tunnel exploration described the network as unusually complex, with multiple interconnected chambers and passageways. He noted that each section appeared to serve a specific operational purpose, ranging from staging areas to concealed weapons storage.

The development comes amid ongoing Israeli military activity in the region. A day earlier, the IDF reported the destruction of approximately 14 kilometres of underground tunnels in northern Gaza, underscoring a broader campaign targeting subterranean militant networks.

Netanyahu has directed the military to intensify operations against Hezbollah positions in Lebanon, signalling a tougher stance against the Iran-backed group. The latest action reflects Israel’s continued focus on neutralising threats along its northern border and preventing the expansion of militant capabilities.

The situation remains fluid, with heightened tensions raising concerns over a potential widening of the conflict in the region.
