Priyanka Gandhi Slams BJP Leader’s Remarks on Geniben Thakor, Calls Them ‘Insulting’

New Delhi/Banaskantha, May 2026 : Senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday strongly criticised comments made by Jagdish Vishwakarma against Banaskantha MP Geniben Thakor, describing them as “shameful and insulting” and intensifying an already heated political controversy.

Taking to social media platform X, Priyanka Gandhi expressed her disapproval of the remarks, stating that targeting a senior woman leader in such a manner reflects poorly on political discourse. She alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demonstrates a contradictory stance when it comes to women’s issues.

“On one hand, women are allegedly subjected to humiliation in Parliament through baseless allegations, and on the other, leaders of the ruling party make derogatory comments publicly,” she said. She further accused the BJP of shielding individuals who engage in such conduct, calling it reflective of a broader pattern.

Priyanka Gandhi also questioned the sincerity of the BJP’s messaging around women’s empowerment. Referring to the party’s campaign narratives, she remarked that the reality behind slogans like “Nari Vandan” does not align with its actions, describing it instead as “anti-women.”

Extending her support to Geniben Thakor, Priyanka Gandhi acknowledged her political journey and resilience. “I am aware of your struggle and stand firmly with you. Your courage is a matter of pride for all of us,” she said, signalling solidarity amid the controversy.

The issue stems from remarks made by Vishwakarma during a public event, the Vijay Vishwas Sammelan, held in Chadotar village in Palanpur, located in Banaskantha district. Addressing party workers, the BJP leader criticised Thakor and suggested that women voters in the region would respond strongly in future elections.

His comments have sparked reactions across political circles, especially in the context of ongoing national discussions on women’s representation in politics. The controversy has also brought renewed attention to debates around legislative measures aimed at increasing women’s participation.

The developments come against the backdrop of the proposed 131st Constitutional Amendment Bill, which sought to accelerate the implementation of 33 per cent reservation for women in legislative bodies. The Bill, however, did not pass in the Lok Sabha on April 17, adding to the political friction around the issue.

With both sides exchanging sharp remarks, the controversy has further heightened tensions between the Congress and the BJP, with women’s representation and respect in public life emerging as a key point of contention.
