Palghar : Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that the expansion of the port in Palghar will transform the economic landscape of the region. This expansion project, which is set to become one of the deepest and largest ports in the world, will connect the area with railways and highways, fostering new business opportunities. Modi assured that the benefits of this project will extend to the local people, the state of Maharashtra, and future generations.

During a ceremony held at CIDCO Ground in Palghar, Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation for the port expansion project, which is estimated to cost around ₹76,200 crore. He also inaugurated fisheries projects and schemes worth ₹1,563 crore. The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Governor C.P. Radhakrishna, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, Union Ministers Sarbanand Sonowal (Port Development, Shipping, and Water Transport), Rajiv Ranjan Singh (Fisheries, Animal Husbandry), George Kurian (State Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry), Shantanu Thakur (State Minister for Port Development, Waterways), and other local officials.

Speech Highlights:

Prime Minister Modi began his address in Marathi by paying tribute to Sant Sena Maharaj on his death anniversary and apologizing for the Sindhudurg incident. He expressed his deep respect for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, describing him as an inspirational figure for himself and his colleagues.

Modi highlighted that the day marked a significant milestone in the development of Maharashtra and India. He pointed out that Maharashtra’s rich and resourceful coastline is crucial for international trade and will create significant opportunities for the future. The new port, built at an investment of over ₹76,200 crore, is expected to handle more container traffic than all other ports in the country combined. It will serve as a major trade and industrial hub, transforming the area from a historical site known for its forts to a modern port city.

Job Creation and Economic Impact:

The expansion is projected to generate 120,000 jobs and attract substantial investment. Modi emphasized that the central government is committed to Maharashtra’s development, with the recently approved Dighi Port Industrial Zone in Raigad serving as a testament to this commitment. He stated that the Dighi Port Industrial Area will embody Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s vision and will enhance tourism and eco-resorts in the region.

Fisheries and Maritime Initiatives:

Modi also announced the launch of schemes worth over ₹700 crore for the fishing community. He highlighted that major projects such as Pradhan Port and Dighi Port Industrial Area are being carried out with the blessings of local deities and with a focus on advancing the fishing industry.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Redefined Maritime Power

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj significantly advanced maritime power. Sarkhel Kanhoji Angre famously challenged the East India Company, a legacy that had faded over time. However, today’s India is transforming, recognizing its strengths and achievements. We are making substantial investments in marine infrastructure, aiming to build ships, create jobs, and enhance shipping efficiency. These efforts are reducing shipping times, benefiting traders and industries, and providing new opportunities for the youth. Notably, the capacity of the country’s ports has doubled.

India is now the second-largest fish producer globally, with fish production and shrimp exports both doubling over the past nine years. The central government is also leading efforts to increase women’s participation in the fish production sector.

Significant Contributions of Tribals and Fishermen

Tribals and fishermen have played a crucial role in the country’s development. Maharashtra, with its 526 villages, koliwades, and 15 lakh fishermen, has made a significant contribution to the fisheries sector. Consequently, our government has established a separate ministry for tribals and fishermen. We are prioritizing the improvement of fishermen’s living conditions and implementing welfare plans. Strengthening fishermen’s organizations and launching schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana aim to enhance their quality of life and create new employment opportunities.
