Vijay’s TVK Storms to Power, Ends Dravidian Stronghold in Tamil Nadu

Chennai, May 2026 : In a dramatic political upheaval, actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay has propelled his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), to emerge as the single largest force in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, marking a decisive break from the state’s decades-long Dravidian political dominance.

In a poignant gesture, the party dedicated its landmark victory to the victims of the Karur stampede, in which 41 people lost their lives during the campaign. TVK leader Aadhava Arjuna said the win belonged to the grieving families, adding that the emotional connect with voters, especially women, played a key role in the party’s sweeping success.

“Women saw Vijay as their own—like a son or brother—and trusted him as a dependable leader. That emotional bond translated into unprecedented support,” Arjuna said, describing the mandate as nothing short of a “political revolution.”

The result effectively disrupts the long-standing dominance of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), which have alternated power in the state for over five decades. TVK’s rise signals a generational shift, driven by youth engagement, grassroots mobilisation, and a strong narrative centred on change and accountability.

Amid concerns over political instability and possible attempts at defections in a closely contested scenario, sources indicated that TVK is taking precautionary measures to safeguard its newly elected legislators. Party MLAs are likely to be accommodated at a private resort near Chennai to prevent any potential horse-trading.

The electoral outcome has also triggered rapid recalibration among other political players. The Indian National Congress is understood to have sent a detailed internal assessment to its top leadership, including Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, exploring the possibility of aligning with TVK in the evolving political landscape.

Congress MP Karthi Chidambaram acknowledged the scale of TVK’s victory, noting that it reflects the changing aspirations of Tamil Nadu’s electorate.

Observers point out that Vijay’s political success stands apart from earlier attempts by film personalities like Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, who struggled to convert popularity into electoral success. Vijay’s campaign, by contrast, was built on sustained grassroots outreach and a focused political narrative.

With strong public backing and momentum on its side, TVK now appears poised to form the government, ushering in a new era in Tamil Nadu politics and redefining the state’s political equations.
