V.S. Babu Upsets M.K. Stalin in Kolathur, Signals Political Shift in Tamil Nadu
Chennai, May 2026 : In one of the most stunning outcomes of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, V.S. Babu of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has defeated sitting Chief Minister M.K. Stalin in the Kolathur constituency, marking a watershed moment in the state’s political history.
Babu, a seasoned politician with a long and eventful career, began his journey as a grassroots organiser in the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). Rising through the ranks, he became the North Chennai district secretary and later won the Purasawalkam Assembly seat in 2006, establishing himself as a key figure in the region’s political landscape.
However, internal shifts within the DMK altered his trajectory. Following changes in the party hierarchy, including the growing influence of leaders like P.K. Sekarbabu, Babu lost his organisational position. Disillusioned, he distanced himself from the DMK and briefly joined the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).
In a significant pre-election move, Babu aligned with C. Joseph Vijay’s TVK, which fielded him from Kolathur—long considered a stronghold of Stalin. The contest quickly emerged as one of the most closely watched battles of the election.
Defying expectations, Babu leveraged local dynamics, anti-incumbency sentiment, and the broader wave in favour of TVK to secure a decisive victory. Stalin, who had represented Kolathur since 2011 and was seeking a fourth consecutive term, was unable to retain his bastion.
The defeat is particularly significant as it places Stalin among a rare group of sitting Chief Ministers in Tamil Nadu who have lost Assembly elections. Historical parallels include P.S. Kumarasamy Raja, M. Bhaktavatsalam, and J. Jayalalithaa, who suffered a notable defeat in the 1996 elections. Another iconic leader, K. Kamaraj, had also faced electoral defeat, though not while serving as Chief Minister.
Babu’s victory is widely seen as emblematic of a broader political churn sweeping Tamil Nadu. The emergence of TVK as a powerful new force has disrupted the decades-long dominance of the DMK and AIADMK, signalling a shift in voter preferences and the rise of alternative leadership.
As the state’s political landscape undergoes this transformation, Babu’s triumph over a sitting Chief Minister stands out as one of the defining moments of the 2026 elections, underscoring the unpredictable and evolving nature of Tamil Nadu politics.
