Mamata Banerjee Refuses to Accept Defeat, Alleges Large-Scale Electoral Irregularities in West Bengal

Kolkata, May 2026 : In the aftermath of a major setback for the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the West Bengal Assembly elections, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has delivered a strongly worded political response, refusing to step down and questioning the legitimacy of the election outcome.

Addressing a press conference in Kolkata, Banerjee made it clear that she does not view the verdict as a democratic or lawful defeat. She asserted that she will continue to remain in office and carry forward her political struggle, framing the result as part of a larger battle for democracy and public rights.

“This is not the end of our fight,” she said, adding that her party will continue to stand for the people of West Bengal and resist what she described as systematic attempts to undermine democratic institutions.

Banerjee also raised serious allegations regarding the conduct of the elections. She claimed that there were widespread irregularities, including tampering of voter lists and incidents of violence in several constituencies during polling. According to her, these issues significantly impacted the fairness of the electoral process.

Launching a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Chief Minister alleged that nearly 100 seats had been “stolen” through manipulation and misuse of power. She described the election outcome as “pre-decided” and questioned whether the process could truly be considered free and fair.

Banerjee further expanded her criticism to include the broader electoral system. She said the TMC was not merely fighting against a political party but against what she termed an entire “system of influence and bias.” She also raised concerns over the role of the Election Commission of India and central security forces, alleging partiality and coordination that, in her view, compromised the integrity of the polls.

While acknowledging that her party respects democratic principles, she insisted that the current results leave behind “serious unanswered questions” that must be addressed by both the public and constitutional bodies.

The BJP, meanwhile, has begun celebrations following its electoral gains, while the TMC camp remains deeply unsettled. Banerjee’s remarks have intensified the political climate in the state, adding a new layer of confrontation to an already charged post-election environment.

Political observers say her statements could lead to further escalation, potentially moving the issue into legal and institutional forums if the allegations are formally pursued. For now, West Bengal remains politically tense, with attention turning to how both parties navigate the aftermath of a deeply contested and controversial election.
