Himanta Biswa Sarma to Resign, BJP Set to Form Government Again in Assam
May 2026 : In a key constitutional step following a sweeping electoral victory, Himanta Biswa Sarma will meet Lakshman Prasad Acharya, the Governor of Assam, on Wednesday to tender his resignation as Chief Minister. The move will pave the way for the formal formation of a new government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after its emphatic win in the Assembly elections.
Speaking to reporters in Guwahati, Sarma confirmed that the BJP’s central leadership has already initiated the process for selecting the leader of the BJP Legislative Party. He revealed that senior leaders, including former party president J. P. Nadda and Nayab Singh Saini, Chief Minister of Haryana, have been appointed as observers for the crucial meeting.
Sarma said he would soon coordinate with Nadda to finalise the schedule for the meeting of newly elected BJP MLAs. “Once the observers direct us to convene the meeting, we will proceed accordingly. The swearing-in ceremony will follow only after the legislative party formally elects its leader,” he stated.
The Chief Minister also emphasised that he would submit his resignation after the Election Commission of India officially notifies the final election results. This step, he noted, is necessary to ensure that the transition of power adheres to constitutional norms and procedures.
The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a decisive mandate in the recently concluded elections, comfortably crossing the majority mark in the 126-member Assembly. The BJP alone won 82 seats, reaffirming its stronghold in the northeastern state and setting the stage for a third consecutive term in power.
The opposition had a comparatively modest performance. The Indian National Congress managed to secure 19 seats, while regional allies like the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) won 10 seats each. The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and Raijor Dal secured two seats each, while the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) opened its account with one seat.
The resounding victory has been widely interpreted as a strong endorsement of the BJP government’s development agenda and governance record under Sarma’s leadership. Celebrations erupted across Assam as party workers and supporters marked the win, viewing it as a reaffirmation of public trust.
With the BJP poised to return to power, attention has now shifted to the formalities of government formation. The date for the swearing-in ceremony will be announced after the BJP Legislature Party elects its leader, a process expected to conclude shortly under the supervision of the appointed observers.
As Assam prepares for another term under BJP leadership, the focus will likely remain on sustaining development momentum while addressing regional aspirations in the diverse and strategically important state.
