CM Hemant Soren Honours Seven-Year-Old Swimmer Ishank Singh for Historic Achievement

Ranchi, May 7: Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Thursday felicitated seven-year-old swimming prodigy Ishank Singh at the Chief Minister’s Residential Office in Ranchi for his remarkable achievement of crossing the challenging Palk Strait between India and Sri Lanka.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister congratulated the young swimmer for bringing pride to Jharkhand and honoured him with a cheque of Rs 5 lakh, a shawl, and a commemorative memento in recognition of his extraordinary accomplishment. He also extended his best wishes for Ishank’s bright future.

Ishank Singh created history on April 30, 2026, by swimming continuously for 9 hours and 50 minutes to cross the difficult 29-kilometre Palk Strait, earning a world record and widespread recognition. His feat has already earned him several honours and titles at different levels.

Praising the young swimmer, Hemant Soren said Ishank’s success has illuminated the name of Jharkhand across the country and the world. He described the achievement as a proud moment for the entire state and said the boy’s dedication, discipline, and determination serve as an inspiration for aspiring athletes.

The Chief Minister emphasised that the Jharkhand government remains committed to promoting sporting talent across the state. He said the government has formulated a progressive sports policy aimed at providing athletes with better training, modern infrastructure, and essential resources to excel at national and international levels.

Soren expressed confidence that Ishank Singh would continue to shine in future national and global competitions and further elevate Jharkhand’s reputation in the field of sports.

Highlighting the importance of nurturing young talent, the Chief Minister said the government would extend every possible support to gifted children like Ishank so they receive proper opportunities and platforms to grow. He added that Jharkhand has consistently produced talented sportspersons who have earned recognition through hard work, discipline, and commitment.

“The achievements of young athletes inspire future generations and create a positive sporting culture in society,” the Chief Minister said.

He also directed officials to prepare plans for expanding swimming-related facilities and training infrastructure in the state. Stressing the need for modern amenities for swimmers, Soren reviewed the current status of swimming facilities and arrangements with officials from the Sports Department during the meeting.

The Chief Minister also honoured Ishank Singh’s parents and coach for their support and contribution towards the young athlete’s success.

Among those present on the occasion were Tourism, Art, Culture, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Sudivya Kumar, Chief Secretary Avinash Kumar, Sports Secretary Mukesh Kumar, Director of Sports Asif Ikram, Deputy Director Rajesh Kumar, and Swimming Association representative Shailendra Tiwari along with other senior officials.
