VCK Signals Support for Vijay-Led TVK Government Amid Tamil Nadu Political Uncertainty
Chennai, May 2026 : Amid continuing political uncertainty in Tamil Nadu following the fractured Assembly election verdict, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) on Friday indicated broad support for the formation of a government led by actor-politician Vijay and his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
The VCK held a high-level committee meeting through video conference on Friday evening, with more than 20 senior leaders and office-bearers participating in the discussions. According to party sources, a majority of the executives expressed support for backing the TVK’s efforts to form the next government in the state.
TVK had emerged as the single largest party in the Assembly elections held on April 23 by winning 108 seats. However, the Vijay-led party fell short of the majority mark of 118 seats required to form the government in the 234-member Assembly.
Following the fractured mandate, TVK began reaching out to constituents of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led alliance to secure outside support. The first breakthrough came when the Indian National Congress decided to support TVK from outside after distancing itself from the DMK alliance in the post-election political developments.
Later, the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) also announced support to a TVK-led government while clarifying that they would remain outside the Cabinet.
Against this backdrop, Friday’s VCK meeting assumed major political significance, as the party’s support could further strengthen Vijay’s position in the race to form the next government.
During the discussions, senior VCK leader Ravikumar reportedly argued that party president Thol. Thirumavalavan should be offered the post of Deputy Chief Minister if the party formally supports the government formation process.
Several leaders supported the proposal and stressed that the VCK should receive adequate representation in the Cabinet in return for its support to the TVK-led administration. Some participants also suggested that VCK deputy general secretary Vanni Arasu should be included in the ministry if the alliance materialises.
Apart from political representation, party leaders also outlined several policy priorities they wanted the proposed government to address. These included stronger measures for Dalit protection, enactment of a special law against honour killings, and a firm stand against communal politics.
The meeting also reportedly discussed the future political role of Thirumavalavan, with some party functionaries suggesting that he should contest from the Tiruchy East Assembly constituency in the future.
Adding to speculation over the VCK’s likely support, Vanni Arasu posted a message on the social media platform X stating, “This is the time for Thiruma’s era, let us rise higher and higher.”
The statement further fuelled expectations that the VCK may soon formally announce its support to Vijay’s bid to form the government, a move that could significantly alter the political landscape of Tamil Nadu and bring the actor-politician closer to becoming the state’s next Chief Minister.
