Haryana-Born Tushar Kumar Becomes Youngest Indian-Origin Mayor in UK History

London, May 2026 : In a historic achievement for the Indian diaspora in the United Kingdom, 23-year-old Tushar Kumar has become the youngest Indian-origin mayor in UK history after being appointed Mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood.

Originally from Haryana, Kumar was formally appointed during the Mayor-Making Ceremony held at Fairway Hall in Borehamwood on May 13. The event was attended by councillors, civic leaders, community organisations, residents, as well as Kumar’s family and friends, marking a proud moment for the local Indian community.

Following the ceremony, Kumar shared his excitement on social media platform X, describing the appointment as one of the greatest honours of his life.

“An incredible honour to officially become Mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood and, at 23 years old, the youngest ever Indian-origin Mayor in UK history. From studying political science at King’s College London to now serving the town I love, this journey feels surreal,” he wrote.

During his acceptance speech, Kumar reflected on his rapid rise in public life. He revealed that he was first elected as a councillor at the age of 20 while still pursuing a degree in political science at King’s College London. His journey from student politics to becoming mayor within just a few years has attracted widespread attention in the UK.

Kumar emphasised the importance of young people participating in public service and democratic institutions. He said he hoped his appointment would inspire more members of the younger generation to engage in local governance, community work, and civic leadership.

According to local reports, Kumar also paid tribute to outgoing Mayor Councillor Dan Ozarow for his guidance and support during his tenure as deputy mayor. He thanked fellow councillors and civic officials for placing their trust in him and pledged to work closely with the newly appointed Deputy Mayor, Councillor Linda Smith, for the betterment of the community.

Expressing gratitude to his family and friends, Kumar acknowledged their constant encouragement throughout his political journey and credited them for helping him remain focused on public service.

Outlining his priorities as mayor, Kumar said he wanted to remain accessible and connected to the people of Elstree and Borehamwood. He promised to be “a mayor who is present for the community” and actively involved with local organisations, charities, and residents throughout his tenure.

“It is the privilege of a lifetime to serve the town I love,” Kumar said during his address.

His appointment has generated significant interest across Britain because of his young age, with Kumar now being regarded as one of the youngest serving mayors in the country. Many observers have described his election as a reflection of the growing involvement of younger leaders in local government and public affairs.

Kumar’s rise is also being seen as a symbol of the increasing influence and participation of the Indian-origin community in British politics and civic administration.
