CM Patel Directs the Roads and Buildings Department to Work on a War Footing to Restore Roads Damaged by Heavy Rainfall in the State

Gandhinagar : Chief Minister Shri Bhupendra Patel has directed the Roads and Buildings Department to take urgent measures to restore roads damaged by heavy rainfall in the state. Following the CM’s directions, the department has accelerated road repair works across the state.
 
Key details of the ongoing efforts include:

  • Total road length under the Roads and Buildings Department: 1,16,000 KM, of which 3,610 KM have been damaged as of 01-09-2024.
  • Instructions have been issued to complete repairs of district main roads by 07-09-2024 and rural roads by 15-09-2024.
  • Temporary repairs are being conducted using materials like GHB, dry metal, and cold-mix asphalt.
  • Regional teams have been instructed to work on a war footing, with Chief Engineers providing continuous supervision from Gandhinagar under the guidance of Secretaries.
  • All ongoing repair work is being reviewed by the respective Collectors and Ministers/Secretaries in coordination with the department.
  • Permanent repairs will be undertaken after the monsoon season ends.
  • Teams are currently utilizing the following equipment: 731 JCBs, 699 dumpers, 557 tractors, 7 Hitachis, 65 rollers, 14 loaders, 48 tree-cutters, and 4 pavers. Approximately 6,487 labourers and 466 teams are involved in these operations.
  • For locations where structures have collapsed, immediate diversions are being made to restore traffic, and vehicles are redirected to alternative roads with appropriate signposts.
  • Regional offices have been instructed to re-verify all structures and implement necessary safety measures.
  • In active work zones, officers, staff, and labourers are required to wear safety jackets and display warning signs like “Work in Progress” to ensure safety during ongoing operations.
  • Repair work is underway on approximately 139 KM of damaged National Highways out of the total 2,894 KM managed by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), in coordination with the State Government.
  • Repair work is being carried out on a war footing on the Vadodara-Vapi, Rajkot-Jetpur, Chiloda-Himatnagar, and other roads.
