Aston Villa Lift Historic UEFA Europa League Title After 44 Years, Beat Freiburg 3-0
Istanbul, May 2026 : Aston Villa ended a 44-year wait for a European trophy by winning their first UEFA Europa League title, defeating Freiburg 3-0 in a commanding final performance. Goals from Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendía and Morgan Rogers sealed a memorable night for the English club, as they lifted their first major continental silverware in decades.

With this triumph, Villa became the 31st different club to win the UEFA Cup/Europa League and only the sixth English side to do so. The victory also continued a recent trend in European football, with three new champions emerging in the last six seasons. Atalanta won in 2023/24, while Unai Emery’s Villarreal claimed the title in 2020/21.
For Emery, the win was historic on a personal level as well, as he became the first manager to win the competition with three different clubs. Remarkably, all three teams carry the word “Villa” in their name—Sevilla, Villarreal, and now Aston Villa—cementing his reputation as the tournament’s most successful coach.
The final, played at the vibrant Beşiktaş Park in Istanbul, carried high stakes for both sides. Freiburg were chasing the first major trophy in their club’s history, while Villa were aiming to end a three-decade wait for silverware. The pressure resulted in a cautious start, with both teams appearing tense and struggling to find rhythm early on.
Chances were limited in the opening phase, as neither side managed to take control. However, the deadlock was finally broken by a moment of brilliance from Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans.
In the 42nd minute, from a short corner routine, Morgan Rogers delivered a precise cross into the box, which Tielemans met with a powerful volley. The strike left goalkeeper Noah Atubolu with no chance and gave the English side a crucial lead just before half-time.
Villa carried that momentum into the second half, maintaining control and adding two more goals to secure a dominant 3-0 victory. Emiliano Buendía and Morgan Rogers also found the net, completing a dream night for the Premier League side.
The win marks a defining moment in Aston Villa’s modern history, ending their long European wait and re-establishing them among the continent’s elite clubs.
