CSK Look Ahead After Difficult IPL Season, Dhoni’s Future Still Unclear

Ahmedabad, May 2026 : Chennai Super Kings bowling coach Eric Simmons has said there is still no clarity over whether legendary former captain MS Dhoni will return for IPL 2027 after missing the entire 2026 season due to injury.

CSK ended another disappointing campaign with a crushing 89-run defeat against Gujarat Titans, a result that confirmed the five-time champions failed to qualify for the playoffs for the third consecutive season. Chennai concluded IPL 2026 with six wins from 14 matches, marking one of the franchise’s toughest phases in recent years.

Speaking after the match, Simmons acknowledged that Dhoni’s absence had significantly affected the team’s balance and confidence throughout the season. He said the veteran wicketkeeper-batter’s experience and leadership were difficult to replace.

“MS Dhoni is someone whose presence automatically changes the balance and confidence of the side. When a player of that stature misses an entire season, it naturally leaves a huge gap,” Simmons said.

He added that discussions regarding Dhoni’s future would take place later, but the team’s immediate focus remains on analysing the shortcomings of the season and rebuilding for the future.

“At this stage, there is still no certainty around whether he will play IPL 2027. Those conversations will happen in due course. Right now, the focus is on understanding where we went wrong this season and how we improve as a unit,” he added.

Despite the disappointing campaign, Simmons said the season offered valuable learning opportunities, especially for younger and less experienced players who were given extended chances in the playing XI.

Fast bowler Anshul Kamboj emerged as a major positive for Chennai, finishing as the team’s leading wicket-taker with 21 wickets in 14 matches. Simmons praised the youngster’s growth and highlighted the importance of continuous development during the off-season.

“As a bowling coach, I prepare detailed reports for every player so they can work on their game over the next several months and return as improved cricketers. We saw that progress clearly with Anshul Kamboj this season,” he said.

Simmons also pointed to the emergence of young talents such as Kartik as one of the brighter aspects of the campaign. According to him, the difficult season helped CSK better understand their squad depth and identify players capable of contributing in the future.

He said the franchise now has a clearer picture of the strengths and limitations of several players, which could help shape a stronger comeback in the coming seasons.
