KKR Opt to Bowl Against DC in Crucial IPL 2026 Clash as Playoff Hopes Hang by a Thread

Mumbai, May 2026 : Kolkata Knight Riders captain Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and elected to bowl first against Delhi Capitals in the final league-stage encounter of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at a packed Eden Gardens on Sunday, with KKR still clinging to slim hopes of reaching the playoffs.

The equation for Kolkata remains complicated. Apart from needing a victory over Delhi Capitals, the defending champions are also dependent on the outcome of the Mumbai Indians versus Rajasthan Royals clash at the Wankhede Stadium. KKR require Mumbai to defeat Rajasthan and then must secure a massive win over Delhi to dramatically improve their net run rate and snatch the final playoff berth.

Despite the pressure surrounding the match, Rahane appeared calm at the toss and stressed that the focus remained on playing positive cricket rather than worrying excessively about external calculations.

“It’s pretty simple for us. We know the scenario depending on what happens in the earlier game, but we cannot control that. What we can control is how we play tonight,” Rahane said after winning the toss.

He added that the Eden Gardens surface looked ideal for batting and explained why KKR preferred to chase under lights.

“The wicket looks really good. Chasing has generally been easier here, and we back ourselves to play aggressive cricket. The last six games have been excellent for us and we want to continue that momentum,” he said.

KKR’s playoff qualification, however, hinges heavily on net run rate. If Delhi Capitals post a target around 180, Kolkata would need to complete the chase in approximately 12 overs to overtake Punjab Kings in the standings. A higher target of 200 would require an even quicker chase, placing enormous pressure on the batting line-up.

Reflecting on Kolkata’s campaign, Rahane praised the character shown by the team after a difficult phase earlier in the tournament.

“I’m extremely proud of the entire unit because it’s never easy to recover from setbacks in a tournament like the IPL. It takes courage, attitude and belief to bounce back. The atmosphere within the group has remained positive throughout,” he said.

He also highlighted the role of the support staff and squad depth in helping the side remain competitive despite fluctuating fortunes during the season.

Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel admitted that he too would have preferred bowling first but remained confident about his side’s ability to post a strong total on what appeared to be a batting-friendly wicket.

“Looking at how the tournament has gone, chasing teams have generally had an advantage. So yes, we would have bowled first too. But the wicket looks very good and this gives our batters an opportunity to set up a total,” Axar said.

Delhi Capitals made two changes to their playing eleven, bringing back left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav and pacer Auqib Nabi. Kuldeep is expected to enter as the Impact Player during Delhi’s bowling innings.

Axar also reflected honestly on Delhi’s inconsistent campaign, stating that the team had failed to capitalise on crucial moments despite playing good cricket overall.

“I don’t think we played poor cricket this season. We were unfortunate in important moments. There were dropped catches and missed opportunities that proved costly. In tournaments like the IPL, small mistakes can completely change your season,” he said.

The Delhi skipper added that such experiences would help the team improve in future editions.

“Every season teaches you something. The important thing is whether you stayed committed to your plans and fought till the end. We did that, and now we move forward,” he added.

An unchanged Kolkata Knight Riders side entered the contest with confidence after a strong late-season resurgence, while Delhi Capitals looked to finish their campaign on a positive note.
