Pollard Admits Mumbai Indians Failed to Deliver in Key Moments as Disappointing IPL Campaign Ends on Sour Note

Mumbai, May 2026 : Mumbai Indians batting coach Kieron Pollard admitted that the franchise endured a frustrating and disappointing Indian Premier League campaign after their season ended with a 30-run defeat to Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.

The five-time IPL champions finished ninth in the 10-team points table, capping off one of their poorest seasons in recent years. Pollard acknowledged that the team failed to build momentum throughout the tournament and repeatedly lost control during crucial moments in matches, ultimately paying the price for inconsistency.

Mumbai Indians’ final game of the season mirrored the story of their entire campaign — moments of promise followed by collapses at key stages.

Despite reducing Rajasthan Royals to 119/5 at one point, Mumbai Indians allowed the visitors to recover strongly and post a challenging 205/8 in their allotted 20 overs. In reply, Mumbai showed signs of mounting a successful chase through aggressive innings from Suryakumar Yadav, Will Jacks and captain Hardik Pandya, but once again failed to finish strongly and ended on 175/9.

The defeat summed up a season in which Mumbai Indians frequently found themselves in winning positions but were unable to capitalise.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Pollard said there was little point in engaging in hindsight analysis or dwelling on “what if” scenarios after the conclusion of a disappointing campaign.

“To be honest, at the end of the season, you know, what if this had happened, if we had done this, if we had played this player — it becomes a bit of that. Overall, it has been disappointing for all of us,” Pollard said.

The former West Indies all-rounder admitted that everyone associated with the franchise, including players, management, and supporters, would naturally feel disappointed after such a difficult season.

“As a Mumbai Indians team, I’m sure the fans and everyone would have felt the same. There’s no hiding from that. We weren’t able to string together wins and use the momentum when we got it,” he added.

Mumbai Indians had entered IPL 2024 with high expectations after assembling a star-studded squad featuring experienced international cricketers and emerging talents. However, the campaign was overshadowed by inconsistency, tactical questions, and the inability to deliver under pressure.

The team struggled for rhythm from the beginning of the tournament and failed to establish a winning streak at any stage. Although there were occasional standout individual performances, Mumbai were unable to perform collectively when it mattered most.

Pollard admitted that the final standings reflected the quality of cricket Mumbai Indians produced over the course of the season.

“When you look at it rationally, I think we got the position that reflected the type of cricket we played throughout the tournament,” he remarked.

The final match against Rajasthan Royals illustrated many of the recurring problems faced by the team this year. After Rajasthan appeared to be in trouble at 119/5, Mumbai lost their grip on the game as the Royals’ lower middle order launched a strong counterattack.

The bowlers struggled to contain runs in the death overs, allowing Rajasthan to cross the 200-run mark — a total that ultimately proved too much despite Mumbai’s promising chase.

Mumbai’s innings began disastrously when veteran opener Rohit Sharma was dismissed before the team could open its account. However, Suryakumar Yadav played a characteristic attacking innings, scoring 60 runs, while Will Jacks contributed 33 and Hardik Pandya added 34.

At one stage, Mumbai Indians looked firmly in the contest, but the dismissals of Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav in quick succession shifted momentum decisively in Rajasthan’s favour.

Pollard pointed to such moments as the defining factor behind Mumbai’s disappointing season.

“When we needed to win critical moments, that’s when we didn’t win critical moments,” he said.

Questions have already begun to emerge regarding the future direction of the franchise, including whether Mumbai Indians need a significant rebuild ahead of the next season.

Pollard was asked whether senior players such as Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, and Hardik Pandya should continue to form the core of the side after inconsistent performances this year.

However, the batting coach cautioned against making emotional or impulsive decisions immediately after a disappointing campaign. He stressed that any review of the squad would need to be thoughtful and carefully analysed by the management.

“If you sit here right now and say you need to do this or do that, I think that would be irresponsible from a management perspective,” Pollard explained.

“Right now is not the time and place to talk about that. These decisions should not be emotional. Everyone needs time and space to sit down, recollect, and have a fair assessment of where things actually went wrong for us.”

Pollard also dismissed suggestions that Mumbai Indians lacked experienced overseas batters in the middle order. He noted that the franchise had several proven players available within the squad, including Quinton de Kock, Sherfane Rutherford, and Will Jacks.

“People always tend to look outward at what other teams have rather than look inward at what we can do better as players and individuals,” he said.

According to Pollard, the issue was not necessarily the composition of the squad but the inability of players to execute plans effectively during pressure situations.

He also revealed that some players had dealt with injuries and fitness concerns during the tournament. Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, one of Mumbai Indians’ key performers over the years, reportedly played through niggles during the campaign.

However, Pollard refused to use injuries as an excuse for the team’s poor season. Referring to comments previously made by head coach Mahela Jayawardene, he noted that Bumrah had also played through discomfort during India’s successful T20 World Cup campaign.

The disappointing season has triggered widespread discussion among fans and experts regarding Mumbai Indians’ future strategy. Once regarded as the IPL’s benchmark franchise, Mumbai now faces questions over leadership, squad balance, tactical planning, and long-term rebuilding.

Despite the setbacks, the franchise still possesses a strong core of experienced players and talented youngsters capable of rebuilding for future seasons. Pollard’s remarks indicated that the management intends to conduct a detailed review rather than rush into dramatic changes.

For now, Mumbai Indians will head into the off-season reflecting on a campaign filled with missed opportunities, inconsistent performances, and crucial moments that slipped away when it mattered most.
