Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong to Visit New Delhi for Quad Talks, Indo-Pacific Cooperation in Focus
New Delhi, May 2026 : Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong is set to arrive in New Delhi on Monday to take part in the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and hold bilateral discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, as the four-nation grouping intensifies coordination on regional security and strategic cooperation in the Indo-Pacific.
Ahead of her visit, Wong described the Quad as “a vital partnership” in the context of growing global uncertainty. In an official statement, she said, “Today I will travel to India to participate in the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and hold the Australia-India Foreign Ministers’ Framework Dialogue.”
She emphasized the importance of collective action among Quad members—Australia, India, Japan, and the United States—stating that the grouping plays a central role in promoting stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
“In these uncertain times, the Quad is a vital partnership – four nations working together to shape a peaceful, stable and prosperous future for the Indo-Pacific region,” Wong said.
The Quad framework focuses on strengthening cooperation in key areas such as maritime security, resilient supply chains, critical minerals, infrastructure development, disaster relief, and emerging technologies. According to Wong, the member countries are already “delivering concrete outcomes on shared interests including maritime security, critical minerals supply, infrastructure development and disaster relief.”
During her New Delhi visit, Wong will also participate in the 17th Australia-India Foreign Ministers’ Framework Dialogue with EAM Jaishankar. She highlighted the increasing importance of bilateral relations between the two countries, noting that “Australia and India’s partnership has never been more consequential.”
She further underlined that both nations, as Comprehensive Strategic Partners, are steadily expanding cooperation across multiple sectors including trade and investment, defence and maritime security, climate and energy transition, strategic technology, as well as education and skills development.
“The Albanese Government will continue to strengthen Australia’s relationships and work even harder in new and existing coalitions like the Quad as we keep building Australia’s future in an ever less stable world,” Wong added.
The Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, scheduled for May 26, will also include Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, alongside EAM S. Jaishankar. The meeting has been convened at the invitation of India’s External Affairs Minister.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the visit reflects the continued momentum in high-level engagement among Quad partners and reaffirms their shared vision for a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region.
An official statement from the ministry said, “In keeping with the Quad vision for a Free and Open Indo-Pacific, the Ministers will build on discussions held in Washington, DC on 1 July 2025. They will exchange views on advancing Quad cooperation across priority areas, review progress on ongoing Quad initiatives, and reflect on recent developments in the Indo-Pacific region and other international issues of mutual concern.”
The discussions are expected to focus on strengthening maritime security architecture, improving resilient and diversified supply chains, boosting infrastructure development in partner countries, and advancing cooperation in critical and emerging technologies.
Climate action, humanitarian assistance, and disaster relief are also expected to be key agenda items, alongside a broader review of ongoing Quad initiatives aimed at enhancing regional stability, economic resilience, and strategic coordination among the four Indo-Pacific democracies.
