Egypt Backs Diplomatic Efforts as US-Iran Nuclear Talks Show Progress

Cairo, June 2026 : Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has said that Egypt is actively supporting efforts aimed at facilitating a comprehensive agreement between the United States and Iran, underscoring the importance of diplomacy in addressing regional tensions.

During a telephone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday, Sisi discussed recent developments in the Middle East and highlighted Egypt’s ongoing engagement with various stakeholders to help advance negotiations between Washington and Tehran.

According to Egyptian officials, Sisi said Cairo has been conducting intensive consultations with concerned parties to support the achievement of a broad agreement that could contribute to regional stability. He stressed that Egypt’s approach is guided by respect for international law, national sovereignty and the rights of countries to manage their own resources.

The discussion between the two leaders also focused on wider regional security concerns. Macron outlined France’s efforts to promote lasting peace and prevent further instability in the Middle East. He emphasized the strategic importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open to international navigation and avoiding any restrictions that could disrupt global trade and energy supplies.

The conversation comes at a time when negotiations between the United States and Iran appear to be making progress. Earlier, US President Donald Trump indicated that Washington was close to reaching a new nuclear agreement with Tehran, although he cautioned that military options remained on the table if diplomatic efforts failed.

Speaking in an interview with Fox News at the White House, Trump said his administration’s primary objective was to ensure that Iran never acquires a nuclear weapon.

According to the US President, discussions with Iran have advanced to a stage where Tehran has agreed to language prohibiting the development or acquisition of nuclear weapons. Trump noted that negotiators had expanded the scope of the agreement after concerns were raised about the possibility of Iran obtaining such weapons from external sources.

He explained that earlier drafts focused solely on preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons, but the proposed language now also addresses the purchase or acquisition of military nuclear capabilities.

Trump acknowledged that the negotiations have been complex and time-consuming, describing Iranian representatives as tough negotiators. Nevertheless, he expressed optimism that the talks were moving in a positive direction.

“Slowly but surely, we’re getting what we want,” he said, while reiterating that a diplomatic solution remained his preferred outcome.

At the same time, Trump maintained that the United States would not hesitate to take further action if negotiations failed to achieve their objectives.

The renewed diplomatic activity involving Egypt, France, the United States and Iran reflects growing international efforts to reduce tensions and secure a long-term agreement that could contribute to greater stability across the Middle East, a region that continues to face multiple political and security challenges.
