Mamata Banerjee Alleges BJP Using Police Pressure to Weaken Trinamool Congress

Kolkata, June 2026 : West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee on Monday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to weaken her party from within by allegedly using the state police machinery to intimidate elected representatives and encourage defections.

Addressing party workers and supporters through a live message on social media, Banerjee claimed that several Trinamool Congress legislators were being subjected to pressure tactics after the recently concluded Assembly elections.

According to her, some MLAs have allegedly been receiving threatening phone calls from police personnel warning them against participating in party activities. She alleged that these calls were followed by approaches from BJP representatives seeking to persuade them to work against the interests of the Trinamool Congress.

“Many of our MLAs are first receiving calls threatening them with cases under the Arms Act and the Narcotics Act if they continue party-related activities. After that, they are contacted by BJP offices and encouraged to weaken the Trinamool Congress from within,” Banerjee claimed.

Her remarks came shortly after the Trinamool Congress announced the expulsion of two legislators — Sandipan Saha from Entally in Kolkata and Ritabrata Banerjee from Uluberia Purba in Howrah district — over alleged anti-party activities.

While refraining from naming the expelled leaders directly during her address, Banerjee said that individuals lacking commitment and ethical values had no place in the party.

“The sooner such people leave the party, the better. We will rebuild and strengthen the organisation. When a party remains in power for a long time, certain elements may try to exploit the system. We will ensure that those who betray the party do not find a way back,” she said.

Banerjee further alleged that some leaders who had risen to prominence and secured electoral positions because of the party were now attempting to damage it from within.

The Chief Minister also accused the administration of selectively denying permission to the Trinamool Congress for public meetings and organisational programmes while allowing similar events by other political parties.

She claimed that such actions were part of a broader strategy aimed at undermining the ruling party. However, she asserted that attempts to weaken the organisation would ultimately fail.

“The more they try to break the Trinamool Congress, the stronger we will become,” Banerjee said.

During her address, she also strongly condemned the attack on her nephew and Trinamool Congress National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee during his visit to Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas district on Saturday.

Mamata Banerjee alleged that the incident could have resulted in serious consequences and criticised those responsible for the attack. She expressed concern over reports that an individual who allegedly attempted to protect Abhishek Banerjee during the incident had subsequently been arrested.

The Chief Minister said the attack had drawn criticism from ordinary citizens and accused political opponents of encouraging a climate of hostility and intimidation.

Her remarks signal an escalation in the political confrontation between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP, with both parties continuing to trade allegations over political violence, defections and the conduct of state institutions in the aftermath of the Assembly elections.
