Sri Lanka Stun Defending Champions New Zealand by Five Wickets as Kerr Laments Fielding Lapses
Southampton, June 2026: Defending champions New Zealand suffered a setback in their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign as Sri Lanka pulled off a thrilling five-wicket victory with just one ball to spare in Southampton. Following the defeat, White Ferns captain Amelia Kerr admitted that poor fielding once again proved costly for her side.
Score:
New Zealand: 150/6 in 20 overs
(Amelia Kerr 45, Sophie Devine 45)
Sri Lanka: 151/5 in 19.5 overs
(Nilakshi de Silva 54*; Kaushani Nuthyangana 24*)
After winning the toss and opting to bat first, New Zealand posted a competitive total of 150/6 on a surface that Kerr described as slower than expected. The innings was anchored by Kerr and veteran all-rounder Sophie Devine, who both scored 45 runs and stitched together a valuable partnership after the team lost an early wicket.
Despite the solid total, New Zealand failed to defend it as Sri Lanka held their nerve in a tense chase. The Sri Lankan innings was led by an unbeaten 54 from Nilakshi de Silva, whose composed knock proved decisive. She found an able partner in Kaushani Nuthyangana, who remained unbeaten on 24, as the pair added a match-winning 48-run stand.
Sri Lanka’s chase was far from straightforward. At one stage, they slipped from 45/1 to 55/4, bringing New Zealand firmly back into the contest. However, de Silva and Nuthyangana absorbed the pressure brilliantly and guided their side to victory with a ball remaining.
Reflecting on the loss, Kerr believed her side had put enough runs on the board to win but rued missed opportunities in the field.
“I thought the wicket was a bit slower. Given the nature of their bowling attack, I felt we had a good total. We had enough runs, though we would have liked more. But once again, our fielding has let us down,” Kerr said after the match.
She also praised Sri Lanka’s approach during the chase, particularly their running between the wickets and ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities.
“I thought they ran really well between the wickets. That partnership at the end was key. If I could have batted for a couple more overs, I might have helped build a stronger platform,” she added.
The defeat places added pressure on New Zealand’s title defense, but Kerr remains optimistic with three group-stage matches still to play.
“We have three matches left, and they are big games for our country. We need to lift ourselves. The biggest area for improvement is fielding. Our batting is strong, and our bowling is creating chances. But catches win matches, and our fielding has not met that standard,” she said.
With the tournament entering a crucial phase, New Zealand will now be eager to bounce back quickly, while Sri Lanka’s dramatic victory has significantly boosted their campaign.
