Manpreet Singh Scripts History as India’s Most-Capped Hockey Player with 413th International Appearance

New Delhi, June 2026 : Indian hockey’s remarkable journey through a century of excellence added another golden chapter on Wednesday as veteran midfielder Manpreet Singh became the most-capped player in the history of Indian hockey. The 33-year-old achieved the milestone during India’s FIH Hockey Pro League 2025/26 match against Germany in Rotterdam, making his 413th international appearance and surpassing the long-standing national record of 412 matches held by former Indian captain and current Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey.

The historic achievement comes at a particularly symbolic moment as Indian hockey celebrates 100 years of its rich and illustrious legacy. By stepping onto the field for the 413th time in the national colours, Manpreet etched his name permanently into the sport’s record books and further strengthened his status as one of the greatest players to represent India.

To honour the landmark achievement, Hockey India announced a cash reward of ₹10 lakh for the veteran midfielder, recognizing his immense contribution to the sport and his extraordinary service to the national team over the past 15 years.

For more than a decade and a half, Manpreet has been the driving force of India’s midfield. Known for his tireless work ethic, exceptional fitness, tactical awareness and leadership qualities, he has played a central role in the revival of Indian hockey on the international stage. Since making his senior international debut in 2011 as a fearless teenager, he has consistently delivered at the highest level, becoming one of the most dependable figures in the Indian squad.

What makes this achievement even more remarkable is the level of consistency Manpreet has maintained throughout his career. In an era where international hockey has become increasingly demanding, the midfielder has remained a fixture in the national team, adapting to evolving styles of play while continuing to perform at elite levels. His ability to sustain excellence over such a long period has earned him widespread respect across the global hockey community.

The milestone also places Manpreet among the sport’s all-time greats internationally. With 413 caps, he now occupies fifth place on the list of the most-capped male hockey players in history. Only four players stand ahead of him: Belgium’s John-John Dohmen with 481 appearances, Dutch legend Teun de Nooijer with 453 caps, Australia’s Eddie Ockenden with 451 appearances, and Great Britain’s Barry Middleton with 432 matches.

In crossing the 400-cap mark, Manpreet has also moved ahead of several legendary names, including Pakistan’s Waseem Ahmed, who finished his career with 410 appearances, and the Netherlands’ Jeroen Delmee, who played 401 international matches.

Perhaps most significantly, Manpreet is currently the only active male hockey player in the world to have surpassed the 400-cap milestone, a testament to both his longevity and his enduring importance to the Indian team.

His journey has mirrored the transformation of Indian hockey itself. Manpreet experienced the disappointment of India’s campaign at the London Olympics in 2012, where the team struggled to make an impact. Instead of being discouraged, he emerged stronger and became one of the key architects of India’s rise back to the top tier of international hockey.

Under his leadership and influence, India enjoyed one of the most successful periods in its modern history. He captained the team to a historic bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, ending a 41-year wait for an Olympic medal in hockey and reigniting the nation’s passion for the sport. The achievement marked a turning point for Indian hockey and cemented Manpreet’s place among the country’s sporting icons.

The successes did not stop there. He played pivotal roles in India’s gold medal-winning campaigns at the Asian Games in 2014 and 2022, helping secure direct qualification for the Olympics. He was also instrumental in India’s Asia Cup triumphs in 2017 and 2025, as well as multiple Asian Champions Trophy victories. More recently, he was part of the squad that secured another Olympic bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Games, making India a back-to-back Olympic medallist.

Born in Mithapur, Jalandhar, a region renowned for producing hockey talent, Manpreet’s rise from a young dreamer to a national icon has been marked by determination and hard work. Widely regarded as one of the finest midfielders of his generation, he has earned numerous accolades throughout his career. In recognition of his achievements, he received the Arjuna Award in 2018 and India’s highest sporting honour, the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, in 2021.

Reacting to the milestone, an emotional Manpreet described it as one of the proudest moments of his career.

“It is a very proud moment for me to have played so many matches for India. Representing the country has always been the biggest honour of my life, and reaching this milestone makes me extremely happy,” he said.

The veteran midfielder dedicated the achievement to the people who have supported him throughout his journey.

“I dedicate this achievement to my teammates and thank Hockey India for its support every step of the way during my career. Every player who has shared the field with me has contributed to this journey. Through all the highs and lows of my career, my teammates have stood by me and supported me. I would also like to dedicate this milestone to my family, especially my mother, brothers, wife and children, who have supported me unconditionally from the very beginning,” he added.

Despite his long list of accomplishments, Manpreet remains motivated by unfinished goals. He revealed that winning the Hockey World Cup and securing an Olympic gold medal continue to inspire him every day.

“What motivates me is that I have always had a dream to play for India and win medals for the country. I am proud to have won medals in back-to-back Olympics, but the World Cup and Olympic gold remain my biggest dreams. My children also motivate me immensely, and the support of my family and teammates gives me energy every time I step onto the field,” he said.

Congratulating Manpreet, Hockey India President Dr. Dilip Tirkey praised the midfielder’s extraordinary commitment and contribution to the sport.

“Becoming the most-capped player in Indian hockey history is an exceptional achievement. It reflects Manpreet’s dedication, consistency and passion for the game. He has played a central role in many of India’s greatest successes and has inspired future generations through his performances and leadership,” Tirkey said.

Hockey India Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh echoed similar sentiments, describing Manpreet’s journey as a shining example of commitment and excellence.

As Indian hockey celebrates a century of glory, Manpreet Singh’s 413th cap represents far more than a numerical record. It symbolizes perseverance, leadership, sacrifice and unwavering dedication to the national cause. From a promising teenager to the most-capped player in Indian hockey history, Manpreet’s remarkable journey stands as a testament to what can be achieved through passion, discipline and an unrelenting desire to serve the nation. His record-breaking appearance is not merely a personal triumph—it is a defining moment in the continuing story of Indian hockey’s resurgence on the global stage.
