Dharamveer Swaraj Rakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Mumbai Coastal Road: The Next Step in Mumbai’s Infrastructure – Chief Minister Eknath Shinde
Mumbai : The Dharamveer Swaraj Rakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Mumbai Coastal Road Project (South) is a game-changer for Mumbai, set to make commuting faster, more comfortable, and time-efficient. It marks a significant milestone in Mumbai’s infrastructure development, said Chief Minister Eknath Shinde during the project’s inauguration today. He expressed confidence that once completed, the journey from Marine Lines to the Bandra Sea Link will take just 10 minutes, saving time, fuel, and enhancing Mumbaikars’ efficiency while reducing pollution.
Chief Minister Shinde inaugurated the Dharamveer Swaraj Rakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Mumbai Coastal Road Project (South) today. The event was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, School Education Minister and Mumbai City Guardian Minister Deepak Kesarkar, Skill Development Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha, and other officials, including Mumbai Municipal Corporation Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the phases of this transformative project are progressing rapidly, and plans are underway to extend it to Versova, Bhayander, and Virar. In the near future, the current 3-4 hour commute between Mumbai and Versova will be reduced to just 40-50 minutes. “This is a project where you will feel as if you are abroad when you look at the bridge. The latest technology has been used, and care has been taken to ensure justice for the Koli brothers,” he said. The coastal road will eventually extend to Palghar, benefiting the port’s expansion as well. Additionally, efforts are being made to make Mumbai pothole-free, with all roads set to be made of concrete. The Chief Minister also assured that measures are being taken to eliminate traffic jams and reduce pollution.
Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis highlighted that all necessary approvals for the project were obtained after Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to power. Under Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s tenure, the project has progressed swiftly. Fadnavis noted that 90 percent of the project has been completed, with the remaining work set to conclude soon.

- Construction of India’s largest diameter tunnel (12.19 m) using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM).
- First-ever use of the Saccardo ventilation system in a road transport tunnel in India.
- Construction of a bridge using monopiles for the first time in the country.
- Development of roads, bridges, elevated roads, underpasses, covered tunnels, sea passages, and under-hill tunnels, alongside green areas through land reclamation, all within a single project.
- First-time mining and construction of a tunnel under a coastal intertidal zone in India.
- Achieved a 90% successful migration of coral colonies as part of the project.
- Installation of a massive beam (bow arch string girder), weighing 2,400 MT and spanning 136 meters, for the first time in India as per calculated estimates.
