Uber India Chief Prabhjeet Singh to Join OpenAI as India Managing Director
New Delhi, June 2026: After an 11-year stint with ride-hailing giant Uber, Prabhjeet Singh has stepped down as President of Uber India and South Asia and will join OpenAI as its Managing Director for India, marking a significant leadership transition in the country’s rapidly expanding artificial intelligence ecosystem.
OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT led by CEO Sam Altman, announced that Singh will assume his new role in September. He will report to Kiran Mani, Managing Director for Asia Pacific, and will spearhead the company’s strategic expansion in India, one of OpenAI’s highest-priority global markets.
In his new position, Singh will oversee OpenAI’s operations across consumer growth, enterprise adoption, strategic partnerships, regulatory engagement, and business operations in India. His responsibilities will also include strengthening collaborations across the country’s AI ecosystem and accelerating the adoption of artificial intelligence among consumers, businesses, educational institutions, and government organisations.
The appointment comes as OpenAI continues to deepen its engagement with India, where AI adoption has witnessed rapid growth across sectors including education, healthcare, finance, software development, and public services.
Singh’s move also brings to a close a decade-long journey with Uber, during which he played a pivotal role in shaping the company’s growth across India and South Asia. Joining Uber more than a decade ago, he oversaw one of the company’s most important international markets, guiding its expansion through an increasingly competitive and technology-driven mobility landscape.
Under his leadership, Uber significantly expanded its footprint across Indian cities while diversifying its offerings beyond traditional cab services. The company introduced multiple mobility solutions, strengthened partnerships with driver-partners, enhanced customer experience through technology, and adapted to changing consumer preferences in one of the world’s fastest-growing digital economies.
Reacting to Singh’s departure, an Uber spokesperson acknowledged his contributions while reaffirming the company’s long-term commitment to India.
“India is one of Uber’s most important markets globally, an important driver of innovation and long-term growth. The strength of our business today reflects the incredible team and foundation built over the years,” the spokesperson said.
The company also thanked Singh for his leadership during his decade-long tenure and expressed confidence in continuing its next phase of growth in the country.
OpenAI’s decision to appoint Singh reflects its growing focus on India as AI technologies gain wider acceptance among enterprises and public institutions. Industry observers believe his extensive experience in scaling technology-led businesses, managing regulatory relationships, and building strategic partnerships will help OpenAI strengthen its presence in the country.
With India’s digital economy expanding rapidly and artificial intelligence emerging as a transformative force across industries, Singh’s appointment signals OpenAI’s intent to play a larger role in the country’s evolving AI landscape while supporting innovation, responsible deployment, and broader adoption of advanced AI technologies.
