MDMK Ends Nine-Year Alliance with DMK, Signals Major Political Realignment in Tamil Nadu

Chennai, June 2026 : In a significant political development ahead of future electoral contests in Tamil Nadu, the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) on Saturday officially announced its decision to withdraw from the DMK-led alliance, bringing an end to a partnership that had lasted for nearly nine years.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the party’s General Council and high-level committee held at the MDMK headquarters in Egmore, Chennai. The meeting was chaired by the party’s auditor, Arjunaraj, and attended by MDMK General Secretary Vaiko along with senior office-bearers and key party leaders.

According to party sources, the leadership unanimously adopted a resolution to exit the DMK alliance after extensive discussions on the party’s political future, organisational priorities and differences that had emerged with its long-time ally. The move marks a major shift in the state’s political landscape and is expected to influence alliance dynamics in the run-up to upcoming elections.

The announcement comes amid growing speculation over the future of senior MDMK leader and Sirkazhi MLA M. Senthil Selvan. Reports suggest that the legislator, who was elected on the DMK’s Rising Sun symbol during the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, is preparing to join the DMK formally.

Senthil Selvan’s absence from Saturday’s General Council meeting further fuelled speculation regarding his political future. He is one of the two MDMK legislators who entered the Assembly after contesting on the DMK’s election symbol as part of the alliance arrangement.

In the 2026 Assembly elections, the MDMK contested from the Sirkazhi and Kadayanallur constituencies under the DMK’s symbol and secured victories in both seats. However, differences are believed to have surfaced after the elections over the party’s political direction and its evolving approach towards the ruling TVK government.

Party insiders indicated that Senthil Selvan had expressed reservations over several policy positions adopted by the MDMK leadership in recent months. Sources also suggested that while he may formally join the DMK, he is unlikely to resign as an MLA since he was elected using the DMK’s official election symbol, allowing him to continue representing the Sirkazhi constituency.

Apart from confirming its exit from the alliance, the General Council also adopted a sharply worded political resolution targeting the DMK leadership. The resolution alleged that the DMK had attempted to cultivate political ties with its long-time rival, the AIADMK, describing such efforts as unacceptable and contrary to the principles on which the alliance had been built.

According to the resolution, it had become “an open secret” that the DMK explored the possibility of forging an understanding with the AIADMK, a development that the MDMK claimed had contributed to growing mistrust between the two parties.

Another notable feature of the meeting was the absence of Durai Vaiko, whose decision to stay away has triggered fresh speculation about possible internal differences within the MDMK. While party leaders did not officially comment on his absence, political observers believe it could indicate differing views within the organisation regarding its future political strategy.

The MDMK’s decision to formally part ways with the DMK is expected to reshape Tamil Nadu’s opposition politics. Political analysts believe the exit could open the door for new alliances and negotiations as regional parties reposition themselves ahead of future electoral battles.

With the nine-year partnership now over, all eyes will be on the MDMK’s next political move and whether the party seeks to forge a new alliance or contest future elections independently.
