Hyderabad Court Acquits MLA T. Raja Singh in 2022 Prophet Remarks Case

Hyderabad, June 2026 : A Special Court for MPs and MLAs in Hyderabad on Tuesday acquitted Goshamahal MLA T. Raja Singh in the 2022 case related to his alleged derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad, holding that the prosecution had failed to establish the charges beyond reasonable doubt.

The court’s verdict brings to a close one of the most high-profile criminal cases against the controversial legislator, who was arrested in August 2022 and subsequently detained under the Preventive Detention (PD) Act for more than two months.

Raja Singh had been booked under Sections 153A(a)(b), 295A, 504, 505(2) and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) following widespread protests and public outrage over his remarks, which had sparked tension in Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana.

His counsel, K. Karuna Sagar, said the Special Court concluded that the prosecution had failed to prove the allegations beyond reasonable doubt and accordingly acquitted the MLA of all charges.

Reacting to the judgment, Raja Singh described the verdict as a “victory of truth” and expressed gratitude to the judiciary for delivering justice.

In a post on social media platform X, the MLA alleged that the then Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government had acted under pressure from the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) by invoking the Preventive Detention Act against him and keeping him behind bars for nearly 77 days.

“During that difficult time, I had complete faith in the judiciary. After coming out of jail, I decided to fight the legal battle in court. For the past four years, this case has been running in the MP-MLA Special Court. I have always presented my side within the framework of the law and the Constitution. Today, after the court proceedings, all the charges levelled against me have been proven false. This is the victory of truth, justice and the law,” he wrote.

The legislator maintained that he never intended to hurt the religious sentiments of any community and denied making comments with such an objective.

Raja Singh also claimed that several cases had been registered against him even after the Congress assumed power in Telangana. Expressing confidence in the judicial process, he said he expected to be acquitted in those cases as well.

Thanking his supporters for standing by him throughout the legal proceedings, he reiterated his respect for the judiciary and said he would continue serving the people while functioning within the framework of the Constitution.

The case dates back to August 2022, when Raja Singh was arrested after his remarks triggered protests across Hyderabad. Then Hyderabad Police Commissioner C.V. Anand invoked the Preventive Detention Act, leading to the MLA’s incarceration.

Raja Singh remained in jail until November 9, 2022, when the Telangana High Court set aside the preventive detention order and granted him bail.

Following the controversy, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) suspended Raja Singh from the party. However, ahead of the 2023 Telangana Assembly elections, the BJP revoked his suspension and once again fielded him from the Goshamahal Assembly constituency, from where he was successfully re-elected.

Last year, Raja Singh resigned from the BJP after he was reportedly prevented from filing his nomination for the election to the post of Telangana BJP president. Despite parting ways with the party, he has continued to remain an influential political figure in the state.
