Indonesian President Prabowo Gives PM Modi Warm Farewell as India-Indonesia Ties Reach New Milestone

Jakarta, July 2026 : Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on Wednesday accorded a special farewell to Prime Minister Narendra Modi by personally seeing him off at the airport as the Indian leader departed for Australia after concluding a three-day State visit to Indonesia.

In a rare diplomatic gesture that reflected the warmth of bilateral ties, President Prabowo accompanied PM Modi to the airport and shared a warm embrace with him before the Prime Minister boarded his aircraft. The gesture mirrored the welcome extended by the Indonesian President on Monday, when he had personally received PM Modi upon his arrival in Jakarta, underscoring the importance Indonesia attached to the visit.

The farewell came after an eventful final day during which PM Modi and President Prabowo jointly inaugurated the India-supported conservation and restoration project at the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Prambanan Temple in Yogyakarta. The restoration initiative highlights the shared commitment of India and Indonesia to preserving their common cultural and civilisational heritage.

Prime Minister Modi also offered prayers at the historic Prambanan Temple, the largest Hindu temple complex in Indonesia, and interacted with temple officials during his visit. Later, he shared an aerial video of the magnificent monument on social media platform X, describing it as “The majestic Prambanan Temple.”

Throughout his three-day visit, PM Modi participated in a series of high-level engagements aimed at strengthening the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Besides holding extensive bilateral talks with President Prabowo, he addressed the Indonesian Parliament, interacted with members of the Indian diaspora, and participated in cultural events highlighting the deep historical ties between the two countries.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the two leaders reviewed the entire spectrum of bilateral relations and discussed ways to further expand cooperation across strategic sectors. Their discussions covered trade and investment, defence and security, maritime cooperation, energy, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, space technology, critical minerals, rare earths, culture, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges.

The leaders also exchanged views on regional and global developments, reaffirming their shared commitment to ensuring peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. Both sides stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation through multilateral platforms and maintaining a rules-based international order.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the discussions reflected the growing depth of the partnership between the two countries.

“The leaders reviewed the full spectrum of the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership encompassing trade and investment, defence and security, maritime cooperation, energy, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, space, critical minerals and rare earths, culture, tourism and people-to-people exchanges,” he said.

He added that both leaders also deliberated on issues of global and multilateral significance while reiterating their common vision for a peaceful and prosperous Indo-Pacific.

The visit also witnessed the exchange of several important bilateral agreements covering maritime safety and security, defence cooperation, space collaboration, steel supply chains, rare earths, healthcare, agriculture, and science and technology. According to the MEA, these agreements are expected to deepen cooperation across key sectors and further strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations.

With his Indonesia visit concluding on a positive note, Prime Minister Modi departed for Australia, the second leg of his foreign tour. During his three-day visit there, he is scheduled to hold the third India-Australia Annual Summit with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

PM Modi will also visit the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and participate in a community event with members of the Indian diaspora in Melbourne, as India continues to strengthen its strategic and people-centric partnerships across the Indo-Pacific region.
