Mbappe Stars as France Beat Morocco 2-0 to Reach Third Straight World Cup Semifinal

Score: France 2-0 Morocco

Dallas Awaits as Mbappe Equals Messi’s Golden Boot Tally with Match-Winning Display

Foxborough, July 2026 : Kylian Mbappe once again proved why he is regarded as one of world football’s greatest match-winners, overcoming an early penalty miss to inspire France to a commanding 2-0 victory over Morocco in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarterfinal at Gillette Stadium on Thursday. The win sends Les Bleus into a third consecutive World Cup semifinal, where they will face either Spain or Belgium in Dallas next Wednesday.

Despite seeing his first-half penalty saved, Mbappe delivered a sensational second-half strike before setting up Ousmane Dembele for France’s second goal, ensuring Didier Deschamps’ side continued its march toward another World Cup final.

The result also kept alive France’s dream of reaching a third successive World Cup final after lifting the trophy in 2018 and finishing runners-up in 2022. It also marked another chapter in France’s dominance over Morocco, having eliminated the Atlas Lions in the 2022 semifinals by the same 2-0 scoreline.

Mbappe’s outstanding performance saw him draw level with Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot, with both superstars now scoring eight goals in the tournament. The Real Madrid forward also reached another remarkable milestone by taking his overall World Cup tally to 20 goals in just 20 appearances, leaving him only one goal behind Messi’s all-time tournament record of 21.

France entered the contest as favourites, but Morocco arrived with confidence after another impressive World Cup campaign. However, the North Africans were hampered by the absence of injured forward Ismael Saibari, whose creativity and finishing ability were sorely missed as they struggled to trouble the French defence.

The opening stages saw France dominate possession and create the better opportunities, with Mbappe posing an immediate threat through his pace and movement. The breakthrough appeared to arrive in the 25th minute when the French captain burst into the penalty area before being brought down by Moroccan defender Noussair Mazraoui.

Argentine referee Facundo Tello immediately pointed to the penalty spot, although the decision underwent a lengthy VAR review after Morocco appealed for a foul on captain Achraf Hakimi during the build-up. Once the penalty was confirmed, Mbappe stepped forward with the opportunity to give France the lead.

However, the usually clinical striker produced an unusually tame spot-kick, allowing Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou to make a comfortable save. It was only the second penalty Mbappe has failed to convert in World Cup competition and served as a reminder that even football’s biggest stars can falter under pressure.

Bounou continued to frustrate France for the remainder of the first half with a series of impressive saves. He brilliantly tipped Desire Doue’s powerful effort around the post after Ayyoub Bouaddi had lost possession in midfield, while Lucas Digne came agonisingly close when his long-range strike crashed against the top of the crossbar.

Despite France’s dominance, Morocco held firm until the interval, keeping the contest finely balanced at 0-0.

France resumed the second half with renewed intensity and finally found the breakthrough in the 60th minute. Doue collected possession before sliding a perfectly weighted pass to Mbappe just outside the penalty area. The French star controlled the ball superbly, used defender Issa Diop as a screen, and unleashed a magnificent curling effort that flew beyond Bounou into the far corner.

The spectacular strike brought the crowd of 63,811 to its feet and underlined Mbappe’s extraordinary ability to deliver on football’s biggest stage. It also took his international tally to 64 goals in 104 appearances for France, strengthening his position as the nation’s all-time leading goalscorer.

Morocco attempted to respond by pushing more players forward, but France remained composed defensively and looked dangerous every time they counterattacked.

Just six minutes after opening the scoring, Mbappe was once again at the heart of the action. Picking up the ball in midfield, he released Ousmane Dembele with a perfectly timed pass. The Ballon d’Or winner raced into the penalty area before calmly curling a low shot into the same corner, with Bounou getting a hand to the effort but unable to prevent the ball from crossing the line.

Dembele’s fifth goal of the tournament effectively ended Morocco’s hopes and gave France complete control of the contest.

Mbappe was substituted in the closing stages and watched the final minutes from the bench with an ice pack strapped around his right ankle, although there appeared to be no immediate concern over his fitness ahead of the semifinal.

While France celebrated another composed knockout victory, Morocco exited the tournament with plenty of pride despite failing to replicate the magical run that made history four years ago. The Atlas Lions once again demonstrated their defensive organisation and fighting spirit but lacked the attacking edge required to break down one of the tournament’s strongest teams.

Midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, the former France Under-21 captain who switched allegiance to Morocco, continued to impress with his composure, highlighting the exciting generation emerging within Moroccan football. With Morocco set to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal, the future remains bright for the African nation.

For France, however, the spotlight firmly belonged to Mbappe.

Already one of the finest players of his generation, the 27-year-old continues to elevate his performances whenever the World Cup comes around. Earlier in the tournament he scored braces against Senegal, Iraq and Sweden, before netting the decisive penalty against Paraguay in the Round of 16.

Against Morocco, he once again demonstrated why he is regarded as football’s biggest match-winner. Even after missing a penalty, Mbappe refused to let disappointment define his evening, responding with a breathtaking goal and an assist that carried France into yet another World Cup semifinal.

With Messi and Argentina still in the hunt, football fans may yet witness another chapter in one of the sport’s greatest modern rivalries. But before dreams of another World Cup final can become reality, France must first overcome either Spain or Belgium in Dallas.

If Mbappe maintains this scintillating form, Les Bleus will believe another appearance in football’s biggest match is well within their reach.
