Russia Offers Joint Production of Advanced T-90MS Tanks in India, Boosting Defence Manufacturing Partnership

New Delhi, July 2026 : Russia has proposed a new phase in its long-standing defence partnership with India by offering to jointly manufacture the advanced T-90MS main battle tank in the country. According to reports, Russia’s state arms exporter Rosoboronexport has invited India to produce the latest export version of the T-90 series under a new industrial collaboration that would significantly expand defence manufacturing ties between the two nations.

The proposal comes after more than two decades of successful cooperation in the licensed production of T-90 tanks and is being positioned as an opportunity to equip the Indian Army with one of the world’s most advanced export-ready main battle tanks while strengthening India’s indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities.

India and Russia have worked together on the T-90 programme since 2001, when New Delhi signed agreements to procure and manufacture the tanks locally. Initially, fully assembled tanks were imported from Russia, but production gradually shifted to India, with the Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF) in Avadi, Tamil Nadu, becoming the centre of domestic assembly and manufacturing.

Earlier this year, India achieved a major milestone by rolling out its 1,000th T-90S tank, highlighting the success of the long-running licensed production programme. Today, most T-90S tanks used by the Indian Army are built in India using a combination of locally manufactured components and critical systems supplied by Russia.

Under the latest proposal, India would manufacture the T-90MS, the most advanced export variant of the T-90 family. The tank incorporates several technologies developed for the Russian Army’s frontline T-90M Proryv, making it a significant upgrade over the T-90S currently in Indian service.

The T-90MS features a more powerful 1,130-horsepower engine, providing improved mobility across diverse terrains. It also incorporates a redesigned turret with enhanced protection, advanced composite armour, a modern fire-control system, next-generation thermal imaging sights and a digital battlefield management system that significantly improves situational awareness and command capabilities.

These enhancements are intended to improve the tank’s effectiveness against evolving battlefield threats while increasing crew survivability. Many of the improvements incorporated into the T-90MS have been developed through years of operational experience and technological refinement.

Unlike previous licensing arrangements, Russia is reportedly presenting the proposal as a broader industrial partnership that would include greater technology transfer and expanded local manufacturing capabilities. Rosoboronexport has indicated its willingness to support indigenous production of the upgraded tank in India, allowing Indian industry to participate in manufacturing advanced armoured platforms rather than simply assembling imported kits.

The move aligns closely with the Government of India’s Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiatives, which seek to increase domestic production of sophisticated defence equipment while reducing dependence on imports. A joint production programme would also strengthen India’s defence industrial base by creating additional opportunities for Indian suppliers, manufacturers and skilled workers involved in armoured vehicle production.

India has already demonstrated strong interest in modernising its armoured fleet. In 2019, the country placed an order for 464 upgraded T-90 tanks, although there has been some uncertainty regarding whether those vehicles fully conformed to the T-90MS standard or represented an intermediate upgraded configuration. Reports have also suggested that discussions on additional acquisitions have continued, though no official confirmation has been issued.

If approved, local production of the T-90MS would provide the Indian Army with a substantially more capable armoured platform at a time when battlefield technologies are rapidly evolving. The enhanced fire-control system, digital networking capabilities and improved mobility would allow the tanks to operate more effectively in high-intensity combat environments while integrating seamlessly into modern battlefield command systems.

Beyond strengthening India’s military capabilities, the proposed programme would reinforce one of the country’s longest-standing strategic defence partnerships. Russia has remained India’s principal supplier of armoured platforms for decades, and the new proposal reflects Moscow’s intent to maintain that relationship through deeper industrial collaboration rather than conventional exports alone.

For India, the initiative offers an opportunity to expand indigenous expertise in advanced armoured vehicle manufacturing, sustain domestic production lines and enhance technological capabilities that could benefit future defence projects.

If the proposal progresses, the joint production of the T-90MS would represent another significant milestone in India-Russia defence cooperation, combining advanced military technology with domestic manufacturing to support the Indian Army’s modernisation while further advancing the country’s long-term vision of self-reliance in defence production.
