Chennai Grand Masters 2026: Arjun Erigaisi Defeats World Champion Gukesh to Share Lead with Firouzja After Round 5

Chennai, July 2026 : Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi delivered one of the biggest results of the tournament by defeating reigning world champion D Gukesh in Round 5 of the Chennai Grand Masters 2026, moving into joint lead alongside French star Alireza Firouzja with just two rounds remaining.

Playing with the black pieces, Erigaisi capitalised on a series of inaccuracies by Gukesh in the middlegame before converting his advantage into a convincing victory after 63 moves. The win took Erigaisi to 3.5 points, level with Firouzja at the top of the standings in India’s premier classical chess tournament being held at The Westin Chennai Velachery Hotel.

Meanwhile, Uzbekistan’s Nodirbek Abdusattorov strengthened his title challenge by defeating Indian Grandmaster Nihal Sarin with the black pieces. Abdusattorov gradually increased the pressure throughout the game before forcing Sarin to resign after 38 moves, taking his tally to 3 points, just half a point behind the joint leaders.

The tournament, featuring eight elite grandmasters in a single round-robin format, carries a total prize purse of Rs 75 lakh along with valuable FIDE Circuit points, making it one of the most significant chess events on the international calendar.

The all-Indian clash between Erigaisi and Gukesh began on a special note, with the ceremonial opening move made by Jeshua J, the Tamil Nadu prodigy who holds the record as the youngest Arena FIDE Master, having earned the title at the age of 7 years, 10 months and 8 days.

Following a balanced opening, Erigaisi maintained a solid defensive setup before seizing the initiative as Gukesh’s precision began to decline in the middlegame. The Hyderabad-based Grandmaster patiently improved his position and eventually created a decisive passed pawn on the d-file. Once promotion to a queen became inevitable, Gukesh resigned, handing Erigaisi a crucial victory in the race for the title.

Joint leader Firouzja, who had won each of his opening two games, settled for a draw against Russian Grandmaster Dmitry Andreikin after 41 moves, allowing Erigaisi to catch him at the top of the standings.

Another encounter saw M Pranesh and Hans Niemann share the points after a hard-fought draw, leaving both players on 2 points.

With only two rounds remaining, the battle for the championship remains finely poised, with Erigaisi and Firouzja leading the field while Abdusattorov remains firmly in contention.
