Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin Resigns, Cites Health Reasons Amid Political Turmoil

Dhaka, July 2026 : Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned from office on Friday, bringing an early end to his tenure amid continuing political developments in the country. His resignation was formally accepted by the Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad (Parliament), according to local media reports.

Shahabuddin, who assumed the presidency in April 2023, was expected to remain in office until April 2028. However, he stepped down nearly two years before the completion of his constitutional term. His resignation marks a significant development in Bangladesh’s evolving political landscape following the dramatic events that reshaped the country’s politics after the nationwide protests of July 2024.

Speaking to leading Bangladeshi newspaper The Daily Star, Shahabuddin attributed his decision to deteriorating health.

“I am suffering from various health complications. I have nothing more to add at this moment,” the outgoing President said.

However, local media reports suggested that political developments may also have played a role in his resignation. According to The Daily Star, Shahabuddin allegedly held a telephone conversation with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina while he was undergoing medical treatment in London in May this year. The report, citing unnamed sources, claimed that intelligence agencies became aware of the conversation, following which the President was reportedly asked to step down.

Despite these reports, a senior leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was quoted as saying that the alleged phone call alone was not the reason for Shahabuddin’s resignation, describing the circumstances as “far more complex.”

Shahabuddin’s continuation in office had remained a subject of political debate since the removal of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government during the mass protests in July 2024. According to Prothom Alo, questions surrounding his role and position persisted throughout the political transition that followed.

His resignation also comes at a time when the BNP-led government has intensified its actions against leaders and supporters associated with the Awami League, adding another layer of uncertainty to Bangladesh’s political environment.

Earlier this year, Shahabuddin had publicly claimed that attempts were made to force him out of office during the tenure of the interim government headed by Muhammad Yunus. In an interview with Bengali daily Kaler Kantho at Bangabhaban, the President’s official residence in Dhaka, he alleged that he had been excluded from important discussions and that efforts were made to undermine both his office and the country’s constitutional framework.

“During those one and a half years, I was not included in any discussions, yet various conspiracies were being hatched against me. There were repeated attempts to disturb the country’s peace and create a constitutional vacuum,” Shahabuddin had said.

His departure leaves Bangladesh without its highest constitutional office-holder at a time of continuing political transition. The resignation is expected to trigger the constitutional process for appointing a new President, while adding fresh momentum to the country’s already dynamic political developments.
