Tamil Nadu CMO to Shift to Namakkal Kavignar Maaligai in Major Secretariat Reorganisation

Chennai, July 2026 : The Tamil Nadu government is set to undertake one of the most significant administrative reorganisations in recent years, with the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) moving from its long-established location inside the historic Fort St. George Secretariat to Namakkal Kavignar Maaligai (NKM). Renovation and infrastructure work at the new premises is progressing rapidly, with officials preparing the facility for the transition.

The relocation marks a major milestone in the functioning of the State Secretariat and represents one of the most notable administrative changes since 2011, when the AIADMK government led by the late J. Jayalalithaa shifted the Secretariat back to Fort St. George after reversing the previous DMK government’s decision to operate from the Omandurar Government Estate.

According to senior government officials, the primary reason for the move is the severe shortage of space at the existing Chief Minister’s Office. Since Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay assumed office, the CMO has witnessed a significant increase in the number of officials, visitors, public representatives and delegations seeking meetings, making the current premises increasingly inadequate for day-to-day operations.

While political circles continue to speculate about other possible reasons behind the relocation, government sources have clarified that the decision is aimed at improving administrative efficiency, streamlining visitor management and providing a more spacious and functional working environment for the Chief Minister and senior officials.

For more than six decades, the Chief Minister’s Office has functioned from the first floor of the iconic Main Building at Fort St. George, one of India’s oldest administrative complexes and the seat of the Tamil Nadu government. Under the new arrangement, the CMO will be housed on the 10th floor of Namakkal Kavignar Maaligai, a modern Secretariat annex that also offers panoramic views of the Bay of Bengal.

The Public Works Department (PWD) has already begun extensive preparations for the transition. Officials said the new Chief Minister’s Office will be established in the existing dining hall located adjacent to the conference hall on the building’s 10th floor. To facilitate the relocation, furniture, kitchen equipment and other fixtures from the dining hall are being shifted to Kalaivanar Arangam, creating space for the new office complex.

The move will also require a substantial internal reshuffle of government departments currently operating from the same floor. Several offices, including sections of the Information and Tamil Development Department, the Home (Prohibition) Department, and the Commercial Taxes Department, will be relocated to accommodate the Chief Minister’s Office.

Officials said the Information and Tamil Development Department will move to Kalaivanar Arangam, while the other departments will be relocated to available spaces within the Fort St. George Secretariat complex to ensure uninterrupted administrative functioning.

Namakkal Kavignar Maaligai is among Tamil Nadu’s most important government buildings. The 10-storey Secretariat annex houses the offices of senior bureaucrats and various wings of nearly 34 government departments, making it one of the state’s principal administrative hubs.

The building was constructed by Parsn Foundation and Engineering Company and inaugurated in 1975 by then Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. Over the decades, it has undergone several rounds of renovation and modernisation to meet the evolving requirements of the State administration.

The proposed relocation is expected to become another landmark chapter in the administrative history of Tamil Nadu. Over the past two decades, the Secretariat has witnessed significant changes in its operational headquarters. The most prominent shift occurred in 2010, when the DMK government moved the Secretariat to the newly built Omandurar Government Estate. However, after coming to power in 2011, the AIADMK government led by Jayalalithaa restored the Secretariat to Fort St. George, while the Omandurar complex was subsequently converted into a multi-speciality government hospital.

Officials believe the latest move will help create a more efficient administrative setup by providing additional space, better infrastructure and improved facilities for governance. Once completed, the relocation is expected to enhance coordination among departments while enabling the Chief Minister’s Office to handle increasing administrative responsibilities more effectively in the years ahead.
