Indian Army to Induct Indigenous Netro NW-3000 Night Vision Sights by 2026-End

New Delhi, Aug 2026 : The Indian Army is set to begin induction of the first batch of locally manufactured Netro NW-3000 Night Vision Weapon Sights by the end of 2026, marking a significant step in the modernisation of infantry equipment and strengthening India’s push for self-reliance in defence production.

Manufactured by Kanpur-based defence company MKU, the initial delivery is expected to comprise around 4,000 units. The induction forms the first phase of a larger procurement programme involving 29,762 night vision weapon sights under a contract valued at around Rs 660 crore, finalised in October 2025.

The procurement has been undertaken under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category, which places emphasis on indigenously designed, developed and manufactured defence equipment. The project is expected to reduce dependence on imported night-fighting systems while strengthening the domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem.

Extensive field testing

Before the contract was awarded, the NW-3000 underwent extensive field evaluations conducted by the Ministry of Defence over nearly a year. The trials were designed to assess the system’s reliability and performance under some of the most demanding operational conditions faced by Indian troops.

The equipment was tested across extreme environments, including freezing conditions at high-altitude locations as well as areas experiencing severe heat. Successful completion of these trials paved the way for its procurement under the Indian-IDDM framework.

The system reportedly contains more than 51 per cent indigenous content and has been developed with the participation of a consortium that includes Medbit Technologies Pvt. Ltd. The project is therefore in line with the government’s broader Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative aimed at expanding domestic defence capabilities and reducing reliance on overseas suppliers.

Designed for night operations

The NW-3000 belongs to MKU’s Netro series of night vision systems and uses Generation-3 image intensifier technology. The sights are intended to provide infantry personnel and special forces with improved visibility and targeting capability in darkness and extremely low-light conditions.

The systems are planned for integration with the Army’s 7.62x51mm SIG 716 assault rifles, providing troops with enhanced observation and engagement capabilities during night operations.

The sights are compatible with standard MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rails, allowing them to be mounted directly on weapons without requiring major modifications. This compatibility is expected to facilitate faster deployment and integration into existing infantry weapon systems.

An integrated infrared illuminator further enhances the system’s effectiveness in conditions where there is little or no ambient light, allowing soldiers to observe and engage targets more effectively.

One of the key features of the NW-3000 is its wider field of view compared with conventional night vision systems. A broader viewing area can help soldiers maintain situational awareness while reducing the need for constant movement of the head or weapon to scan the surroundings.

Extended service support

The procurement also includes long-term operational and maintenance support. The systems are designed to provide an operational lifespan of 10 years or 10,000 hours, with a comprehensive decade-long maintenance and training package planned to support the Army.

According to the manufacturer, the sight offers different detection, recognition and identification ranges depending on the target. Personnel can reportedly be detected at up to 500 metres, recognised at 300 metres and identified at 100 metres. For vehicles and other platforms, the corresponding ranges are 600 metres, 400 metres and 150 metres.

Boost to night-fighting capability

The induction of the NW-3000 is expected to significantly enhance the Indian Army’s night-fighting capabilities, particularly as operations along the country’s northern and western borders increasingly demand round-the-clock surveillance and combat readiness.

Advanced night vision systems allow infantry units to detect potential threats earlier, improve target discrimination and operate more effectively in darkness. This can enhance both troop survivability and combat effectiveness by giving soldiers greater visibility without necessarily exposing their positions.

The large-scale procurement also highlights the growing capabilities of India’s private defence industry. MKU, which has developed expertise in ballistic protection and electro-optical systems, is increasingly expanding its presence in the global defence and soldier-modernisation market.

The planned induction of thousands of indigenous night vision sights therefore represents not only an upgrade in infantry equipment but also another milestone in India’s broader effort to develop a technologically advanced and self-reliant defence manufacturing ecosystem.
