Chief Justice to Unveil Cornerstone of New Bombay High Court Complex Tomorrow
Mumbai : The cornerstone for the new Bombay High Court complex, to be built in Bandra East, Mumbai, will be unveiled on Monday, September 23, 2024, by Chief Justice Dr. Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud.
The ceremony will be attended by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, along with Supreme Court Justices B.R. Gavai, A.S. Oka, Dipankar Datta, Ujjal Bhuyan, Prasanna B. Varale, and Chief Justice of Bombay High Court Devendra Singh. Kumar Upadhyay will also be present at the event.
The current Bombay High Court building, located near Flora Fountain, was established on August 16, 1862. The iconic structure, completed in November 1878, was originally designed to accommodate only six courts and ten judges.
As the capital of Maharashtra and a leading hub for industrial and economic development, Mumbai now requires a modernized High Court facility. The proposed complex will address this need by offering several modern amenities, including courtrooms, a hall for judges and administrative staff, lawyer’s chambers, an auditorium, a library, banking services, medical facilities, a cafeteria, parking space, and a museum. Additionally, the building will be equipped with all necessary facilities for persons with disabilities.
