Lunglei HPC Vice Chairman Pu V. Malsawmtluanga Attends the YMA Branch Inauguration

Today, a significant event took place at the Lunglei Sub-Headquarters where various YMA branches inaugurated a special program focused on indigenous games, organized by Doordarshan Kendra (DDK) Mizoram, the Mizoram Indigenous Games Association (MIGA), and the Young Mizo Association (YMA) Lunglei Sub-Headquarters, along with the Mizoram Journalists’ Association (MJA) for the Lunglei District. The event, titled “Doordarshan Mizoram Indigenous Games 2024 (Inter-Branch Competition, Lunglei District),” commenced at 10:30 AM with the Vice Chairman of the Lunglei High Powered Committee (HPC), Pu V. Malsawmtluanga, MLA, officiating at Chanmari Hall.

During his address, Pu V. Malsawmtluanga emphasized the importance of indigenous games, describing them as significant for community identity, unity, and cultural preservation. He noted that the government is committed to enhancing the quality of life for its citizens, focusing on infrastructure and educational improvements. He acknowledged the efforts needed to excel in various competitive examinations and highlighted the growing opportunities for employment within the state.

Pu Malsawmtluanga mentioned the need for support in training for banking and central subordinate exams, urging participants to take advantage of available schemes to cultivate talent in sports and other areas among the youth.

He also announced that the DD Mizoram Indigenous Games 2024 would be a district-wide initiative, led by Programme Executive & MIG Producer Pu T. Siama from DDK Aizawl. The games will be held in February 2024 and will involve various districts, aiming to elevate the profile of Mizoram’s indigenous sports on a national level.

Lunglei Sub-Headquarters YMA Sports Committee Chairman Pu Francis Lalnuntluanga Ralte expressed his thoughts on the significance of indigenous games and their potential for fostering community spirit. Additionally, YMA Vice President Pu CMS Dawngliana highlighted the necessity of participation from YMA members, stating that these games should reflect the motto “Unity in Diversity.”

The event saw participation from Lunglei Municipal Council (LMC) Vice Chairman and Chanmari Ward Councillor Pu K. Lalrinawma, alongside representatives from DDK, MIGA, Sub-Headquarters YMA, and the District MJA. Officials from various sectors also attended to encourage the development of indigenous sports.

During the Mizoram Indigenous Games Inter-Branch YMA Competition, a total of 17 teams from various YMA branches participated. Events included traditional sports such as wrestling, tug-of-war, and others. Categories included different weight classes for male participants, with specific teams competing in designated categories.

As part of the district-level MIG initiative, various items will be contested, culminating in the State Level Mizoram Indigenous Games Competition to be held in Aizawl in November.
