Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin Reviews Monsoon Preparedness in Chennai

Chennai : Hon’ble Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Mr. Udhayanidhi Stalin reviewed the state’s monsoon preparedness in the Chennai Municipal Corporation areas, including Sabarimangalam and Erud. The Deputy Chief Minister focused on the implementation of unified disaster response and control measures. The review aimed to ensure that all necessary preparations were in place ahead of the expected heavy rains.

Mr. Stalin emphasized the importance of closely monitoring pre-emptive and emergency tasks, as the Indian Ocean Survey has predicted heavy rainfall, with potential downpours reaching up to 20 cm in the coming days. He directed officials to prioritize public safety and ensure the availability of essential services such as clean drinking water, food supplies, and medical assistance.

The Tamil Nadu government has activated a helpline number, 1913, for public assistance during the monsoon season. Around 150 personnel are working in shifts at the control room to handle any emergencies. Additionally, government volunteers have been mobilized, and irrigation systems with a capacity of 100 cubic meters have been readied in flood-prone areas. The government has also deployed 100 mobile water pumps in low-lying areas to prevent waterlogging.

A new app, “TN ALERT,” has been launched to facilitate real-time updates and communication for the public. The Deputy Chief Minister urged residents to download the app to stay informed and report any emergencies or civic issues, such as open manholes or drainage blockages, via the corporation’s social media platforms.

Further measures include relocating electrical transformers to higher ground, installing water level sensors in vulnerable wards, and coordinating efforts between various government departments to ensure the proper supply of water and other essential services.

Mr. Stalin concluded by instructing local authorities to secure all construction sites and drainage channels, erect safety barriers around hazardous areas, and take prompt action on public complaints.

The Tamil Nadu government has enhanced its monsoon preparedness efforts, deploying additional electronic monitoring staff. The goal is to ensure minimal disruption to the public, with government officials, municipal corporation employees, and local authorities fully committed to addressing potential issues.

As part of the preparations, 356 water tanks have been arranged to ensure an uninterrupted supply of drinking water across affected areas. Surveillance systems, including camera trails, have been implemented for real-time monitoring. Additionally, 373 machines for remote operation, including advanced equipment, have been imported to assist in emergency response efforts. The initiative also includes the use of 83 sewage treatment plants to manage wastewater effectively.

The government has issued detailed guidelines for disaster management, emphasizing the importance of compliance with safety measures during the monsoon period. Public awareness will be raised through news articles and media coverage to keep residents informed about safety protocols.

Mayor Mr. Thirethi R., Deputy Mayor Mr. K. Queraguruparan, and Dr. Yomarash Ayedu from Special Projects will be leading the preparations, alongside other local officials. Their efforts aim to ensure the safety of the community during the upcoming monsoon season.
