In an ongoing effort to enhance the protection of children with disabilities The Supreme Court of India hosted a significant event aimed at advancing the rights of children living with disabilities. This two-day National Annual Stakeholders Consultation, took place on September 28-29, 2024. Organized by the Juvenile Justice Committee of the Supreme Court in collaboration with UNICEF India, this consultation brought together a diverse group of stakeholders to discuss and strategize on improving the lives of children with disabilities.
Background and Objectives
The Supreme Court of India has a long-standing tradition of advocating for the rights of children. This annual consultation was part of a broader initiative to ensure that children, particularly those with disabilities, receive the care and protection they need. Annapurna Devi, Hon’ble Minister of Women and Child Development, and UNICEF India Representative Ms. Cynthia McCaffrey also delivered significant remarks. A handbook was released on inclusive terminology for disabilities aimed at sensitizing the legal community to appropriate language around disability. It will also be made available in Braille and an audiobook ensuring accessibility for all. The event structured into four comprehensive sessions:
- Global Instruments and National Legislations: This session covered international treaties, national laws, and various central and state schemes aimed at protecting the rights of children with disabilities.
- Family-Based Alternative Care Services and Social Support: Discussions focused on the importance of family-based care and the social support systems necessary for the well-being of children with disabilities.
- Mental and Physical Health and Education: This session emphasized the need for effective convergence and implementation of health and education services for children with disabilities.
- Ensuring Convergence Between Relevant Legislations: The final session addressed the need for coherence and synergy between different laws and policies affecting children with disabilities.
