Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M.K. Stalin, inspected various flood relief activities today
In the Chennai area, particularly around the Guindy Race Club, and in the nearby Racheri, Ailre Arukan, and Kalsettu regions, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin of Tamil Nadu has conducted a thorough review of various developmental projects. Today (16th October 2024), he visited areas such as Thiruvallur, Chengalpattu, and Kanchipuram to inspect ongoing initiatives aimed at reviving lakes like Naoyanabuem and transforming them into significant water resources.
The Chief Minister announced that 160.86 acres of reclaimed land in the Guindy Race Club area would be utilized for parks and gardens to benefit the local community. Moreover, dredging work is being carried out in the Chennai region to restore water bodies and improve the groundwater levels, including new construction around lakes with a combined capacity of 4.24 million cubic feet.
The state government is committed to furthering these efforts to alleviate waterlogging. Currently, 22 tunnels have been installed, and out of 542 identified waterlogged spots, the majority have been cleared, with ongoing efforts at the remaining locations. In addition, arrangements are being made for emergency shelters, where thousands of people have already been provided food and accommodation.
Lastly, under the directives of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Amma Canteens across the region will continue serving meals on 16th and 17th October 2024 to ensure that the affected communities have access to food.
In the last 24 hours, the Sabarunake Senmai Municipal Corporation has managed the rescue of 6,120 individuals. The State Disaster Relief Committee and the National Disaster Relief Agency have deployed eight teams in the area. The National Disaster Response Force is active in Pamadair, Manali, Egmore, Seiya Nagar, and Pallikaraman, while the State Disaster Relief Committee is engaged in Seiya Nagar-2, Villikom, and has received recognition at the Rajarathiyam Arena.
The rescue operations involve 80 members from the State Personnel Rescue Team and 100 soldiers from the National Personnel Rescue Team, equipped with rescue boats, chainsaws, and other equipment. A total of 103 boats are prepared for the rescue efforts.
In celebration of Mother’s Day, special health care camps, known as Maruthe camps, are being held at 100 locations across Senmai. For sewage disposal under the Senmai Drinking Water Project, 73 super ecker machines and 89 miscellaneous machines are operational, along with 524 desilting machines.
Daily, 453 trucks will supply drinking water to Ramalum and Sirai water points, with an additional 36 trucks deployed for this purpose. This initiative is led by Hon’ble Mr. Raga N. Ranaru and includes the efforts of other officials such as Hon’ble Maruthem, MP Ma. Subpemaniam, and several local council members.
The project is overseen by Secretary Dr. Karthirakayan, with support from various officials involved in the Sabarunagar Water Supply and Sewerage Project, including Director Yagir D.G. Wei.
